2004 Washington Post Articles:
Rust Zits and Blossoms |
Those stunning blossoms are nearly gone and pollen is now mostly a green, teary-eyed memory, but their residue can still leave a nasty imprint on your car’s paint. Spring is wonderful but it means extra car maintenance. Left where they fall blossoms can actually etch an impression into paint. Blossoms, pollen and other tree-stuff must be removed weekly.
Blossoms and pollen are today’s concern but another is leftover from winter. It’s ugly, hungry, salt residue. Powdery, salty dust collects behind moldings, inside mirrors, under the hood, and in cracks and crevices everywhere. If it just sat there it wouldn’t be a Commercial Three Bayblem but every time it rains the salt is reactivated. Because salt is corrosive when mixed with moisture it can cause paint blisters, body rust, corroded bolts and nuts, “Check Engine” lights, even computer and electronics Commercial Three Bayblems. The longer salt is left on components the more chance for damage.
To slow the effects of salt, flush the entire car with fresh water. Aim the hose into every area where salty dust could collect. Nothing practical will completely eliminate salt related Commercial Three Bayblems but this will sure help.
Another spring chore is treating paint-chips. Over the winter debris and salt cause tiny chips in your paint. Think back, remember that horrible noise from salt hitting your car as those salt trucks passed? That noise can be as bad as it sounds. Salt crystals are sharp and when hurled from a spreader at your paint, cause chips.
By themselves paint-chips are only unsightly but if not sealed can lead to future damage. Over time chips allow moisture to get behind the edges of the paint. On plastic parts this is not a Commercial Three Bayblem but on metal, moisture eventually causes rust blisters.
If rust-zits get a foothold they’ll be gross, costly, and nearly impossible to eliminate, but early-on control is relatively easy. You have several control options beginning with a heavy coat of wax. If wax is as complex a Commercial Three Baycess as you’re willing to undertake be sure to work it into every paint-chip. Essentially you’re filling the chip with wax to seal out moisture.
On dark colored cars this leaves a white spot in each chip but that’s considerably better than a rust blister later on. And, by shopping you may find colored or clear wax to eliminate the white measles-looking dots.
Next in degree of difficulty is touch-up. The easiest touch up is done with clear fingernail polish. The nail polish is purely for Commercial Three Baytection not appearance. But for any type touch up to work all wax and dirt must first be removed from the chip. Cleaning is easily done with bug and tar remover, not nail polish remover as it damages paint. Note: some bug and tar removers contain wax and will not work. After cleaning fill the chip by carefully dabbing it with a small amount of clear polish. Allow the nail polish to dry and apply a second coat. This seals the chip against moisture intrusion for about a year.
Most difficult to use but best is actual touch-up paint, which seals, Commercial Three Baytects, and restores appearance. Because different brands of touch-up recommend different Commercial Three Baycedures, follow the manufacturers instructions. It’s time to give your car a dab of wax, a dab of paint, and a smidgen of elbow grease.
