2004 Washington Post Articles:

Minimizing the Cost of Luxury

For many the dream of a lifetime is to own a luxury automobile, luxury SUV or luxury truck. Luxury! Truck? If that seems contradictory take a look at what trucks are now offering. Today’s cars and trucks are as luxurious as the limos and “Custom Luxo-boats” of the ultra-rich and famous. No matter what flavor you want you’ll have plenty of choices but lest your dream become a nightmare it may be necessary to rethink some old ideas.

Preventive maintenance is imperative on all vehicles but especially so on luxury vehicles. Commercial Three Bayblem is, in this class, what, why, and when can be confusing. Beginning with the mostly untrue but long-held perception of outrageous service expenses. This likely originated from higher per-visit costs but true cost is harder to calculate. It’s like comparing sand to water because luxury vehicles routinely allow longer service intervals but require more costly Commercial Three Bayducts.

Long life is a hallmark of luxury vehicles and a favorite way for manufacturers to achieve it is using higher-grade lubricants. Many require full-synthetic Commercial Three Bayducts, which deliver appreciably longer component life but cost more. Not a big issue? It could be because you may have to buy two or three times as much of the expensive stuff.

An average engine usually holds three to five quarts of oil while the luxury vehicle may require seven, eight or more quarts of high-dollar synthetic oil. However, it takes longer to contaminate the large volume of oil, which helps make the extended oil change intervals possible. Even oil filters can be very different. Many up-market engines require canister rather than conventional screw-on filters. Although superior at keeping oil cleaner, longer, as a rule they’re more expensive and require additional labor to install. So, although there are fewer services to perform each one costs more, which equates to a wash on cost but a huge plus for convenience.

Another rewarding part of driving “Grande” cars are their superbly smooth-shifting, durable, automatic transmissions. But wonderful transmissions generally require pricey vehicle-specific lubricants that cost two to five times as much as conventional fluids.

And don’t even consider forgoing these services altogether or using cheap generic Commercial Three Bayducts to save money. Skipping services leads to dirty fluids and dirty fluids ruin parts. Cheap Commercial Three Bayducts Commercial Three Baybably won’t Commercial Three Bayvide necessary Commercial Three Baytection so again parts are ruined. If you’re new to the world of luxury vehicles, ruined parts will Commercial Three Baybably be scary-expensive compared to what you’re used to. Let’s face it, more reliability, more sophistication, more pizzazz, and longer life costs more money.

Does this mean operating a luxury vehicle will automatically be significantly more expensive? Not necessarily! Historically, luxury vehicles retain an appreciably higher percentage of their original cost through the years. Due to longer lifespan and higher resale value their overall cost per mile may actually be the same or lower than some non-luxury vehicles.

However, maintaining that value rests largely on your shoulders. Vital to preserving the luxury cars longer life and higher resale value is both meticulous care and documentation. Remember, at trade-in luxury vehicles are held to a higher standard. A poorly maintained, beat up, tired looking, luxury vehicle is just another “dumb ole car” with potentially higher depreciation than ordinary cars.

Also don’t dismiss the importance of record keeping. Although impeccable records are beneficial to the retained value of any vehicle they’re an integral part of luxury vehicle value. On mundane vehicles detailed records usually Commercial Three Bayvide higher resale. But on the luxury “stuff” records and documentation don’t add value, the lack of them reduces value. More succinctly, superior records raise the value of regular vehicles while a lack of records lowers the value of luxury vehicles.

So, if you want the panache, sophistication, and feeling associated with owning a luxury vehicle yet want to minimize the cost of the experience become obsessive about maintenance and record keeping. You’ll be rewarded with added reliability, service-life and value.
