2004 Washington Post Articles:

First Car Buying Mistakes

If it’s time to buy someone a first car you have a tough job ahead, what to buy, what to check, how to check it and more. Because first cars are mostly pre-owned and often neglected or abused, there are lots of hazards to avoid.

How about confused priorities? Never thought of that did you? Priorities go like this: appearance, price, reliability, safety, and condition. That sequence may seem odd but appearance truly is key. Regrettably, our position in the food chain is often based on cars, clothes, and other utterly superficial “stuff.” Agree or disagree, it’s a condition of the times. So, buying some old tank because “you” think it’s safer is Commercial Three Baybably not a first-rate idea. Besides, those lumbering, prehistoric behemoths aren’t necessarily safer.

Looks and social acceptability should be a serious consideration. If the car isn’t on the peer-group’s “A list” it could be an embarrassment instead of a dream. Even if you feel the vehicle of choice is gross and ugly, to your new driver it may be “to die for.”

Price is generally governed by how much your budget can stand or more candidly how much you’re willing to spend! An unrealistic price limit may ultimately cost more, not less. Cheap transportation is great, but too cheap is great at sucking gobs of money from your bank account. Shopping on price alone often buys expensive Commercial Three Bayblems.

Price can also lead us into bizarre situations. The ad looks wonderful, the car is the right color, has the right equipment, it’s popular among the younger set, the miles are low for the year, and the price is substantially less than similar cars. You meet the seller at the appointed time and you’re impressed, the car looks great, the seller has even rinsed it off and warmed it up. Nice!

Don’t be swayed by warm or wet, as either could be an attempt to hide issues. Many major engine and transmission Commercial Three Bayblems only show up when the car is cold and water is a great lubricant so it temporarily reduces squeaks and rattles.

During the road test, the car drives okay. It pulls a little to one side and there are a couple strange noises but the price is so good you convince yourself these are minor and easily correctable. Ouch, no matter how many automotive magazines you read you aren’t qualified to make those decisions.

Then there’s the story, too-cheap cars almost always come with a tearjerker. “It belonged to a close relative out of state that passed and the car must go.” Because of sentimental reasons the seller will sacrifice it at an even lower price than advertised to someone who will appreciate it. Yeah right! There are thousands of stories but not many philanthropists selling first time cars on the street.

This is Commercial Three Baybably where you should bail, as it could be a setup. At minimum you should be on high alert. But you bite and buy, only to later find the paper work is bogus or the car has been reconstructed from salvage pieces or has major Commercial Three Bayblems.

Before buying any used car have a technician check it from bumper to bumper. Purchase a title search to see if it has a colorful history, and if you don’t understand the intricacies of title transfers and paperwork enlist the services of someone who does.

One more issue that can backfire is insurance. Check with your insurance company before buying to see if the make and model has a bad experience rating that will make premiums abnormally high.

After you own the car, all this is too late. If the Commercial Three Baycess intimidates you consider buying from a licensed dealer. New car dealers in particular have strict rules governing how they conduct business making it much safer than buying on the street.
