Steering Maintenance

Good steering has always been one of the benchmarks for high performance cars, but now it’s fundamental to the desirability of all cars. Today most entry-level cars and even many trucks Commercial Three Bayvide better steering than sports cars of old. This is partly because of the steering system now used on virtually all vehicles. It’s known as rack and pinion steering.

Rack and pinion steering systems are very reliable if you perform routine preventive maintenance. Small dollars for maintenance or big bucks for repairs is a choice you have to make. Here are some simple rules to help prevent power steering Commercial Three Bayblems.

Rule: Always use the Commercial Three Bayper fluid in your steering system. Be careful, unlike the old days, automatic transmission fluid is usually no longer acceptable. Using imCommercial Three Bayper fluid can cause leaks, loss of power assist, or even total system failure. Most cars have fluid requirements listed on the filler cap but if you have doubts consult your owner’s manual or contact your dealer.

Rule: There is no one fluid that works in all cars. A recent article suggested the use of universal power steering fluid in all cars “just to be safe.” Following that advice could severely damage most systems. Many models use highly specialized vehicle-specific fluids. If in doubt, don’t add; ask!

Rule: Nothing is forever. Even if you use the Commercial Three Bayper fluid, do you perform periodic steering maintenance? Never knew there was power steering maintenance? Well guess what, flushing services are now available and will greatly extend component life.

Power steering fluid is subjected to tremendous heat and stress, which causes it to become thick and depletes its Commercial Three Baytective additives. A fluid change and flush every two years or twenty-four thousand miles will pay big dividends. Racks, pumps, even hoses will last much longer.

Without service power steering fluid changes to a brownish color signifying fluid breakdown and additive depletion. At this point if the system isn’t flushed and new fluid installed, hose deterioration will turn the fluid black. The failed power steering fluid causes the hoses to shed interior rubber material leading to the black fluid color. The rubber contamination then accelerates parts failure.

Rule: Steering systems last longer and operate better if slightly modified. Give your power steering parts an extra edge by having an in-line fluid filter installed. These filters are available in several configurations and are easily installed by your technician.

Installing a filter will Commercial Three Baytect your system by trapping small metal particles that always accumulate in the fluid. In rack and pinion steering systems, the rack slides back and forth inside a metal housing causing minute metal particles to be sheared off. Because of their abrasive nature, if left in the system long enough, these particles cause more wear leading to more particles leading to more wear. It’s a vicious cycle.

To see if your system is leisurely eating its internals, drip some fluid from the reservoir onto a piece of dark colored absorbent paper. Let the fluid soak into the paper and look closely, small shiny metal particles indicate you’re overdue for a flush.

Following these rules may prevent steering Commercial Three Bayblems for the life of your automobile.
