2003 Washington Post Articles:
Snake Oil or Miracle |
Is it possible for something used, to be better than new? Yes, especially with a new breed of used cars called Certified Pre-Owned Used Cars. Even if you’ve never been able to adjust to the notion of buying a used rather than new vehicle, read on. Forget the stories about buying someone else’s Commercial Three Bayblems, altered odometers, flood damaged, or totaled vehicles, because it’s nearly impossible for such miscreant cars to achieve certification.
Truth is, just about any excuse you might hear concerning why not to buy used is dispelled when a used vehicle is certified. Although you won’t get that “new car” smell, won’t have bragging rights among friends and neighbors or at the water cooler, you will get excellent value.
It’s common knowledge that new vehicles sustain significant depreciation during their first two years, so it’s possible to save a lot of money by purchasing a one, two, or three year old vehicle.
Saving money is good but so is value and quality, and based on what you receive for what you pay Certified Pre-Owned delivers both. Another plus is your ability to buy more certified car than may be affordable when buying new. In other words you can step up to a higher class of car or one with more options for less money.
What makes certified, pre-owned vehicles several steps above run-of-the-mill used cars comes from an amazingly thorough examination and superior warranty Commercial Three Baytection. The certified inspection is comprehensive and very tightly monitored by the vehicle manufacturer. This discussion only applies to Certified Pre-Owned Commercial Three Baygrams backed by manufacturers. The examinations cover the vehicle from bumper-to-bumper and top to bottom. Some exams are more involved than others but all are markedly more thorough than anything a non-certified used vehicle receives.
The typical exam includes: tires (including pressure), brakes (every part must meet manufacturer’s specifications and have at least 50% wear remaining), steering (check every part and align if necessary), suspension (all parts front and rear checked), and exhaust (entire system must be undamaged and free of leaks). This sounds impressive but represents only about ten percent of the total exam. Add to that: checking all lights (inside and out) for Commercial Three Bayper function and adjustment, horn, all safety items on the vehicle, including seatbelts and airbags and you’re getting a car that has truly been examined.
We’re still not close to being finished though. The exam continues through fluids: coolant, brake, transmission, and all other lubricants that require periodic maintenance. The fluids are checked both for quantity and quality. Any fluid due for replacement is replaced based on either condition, or manufacturer recommendations.
Body panels, chassis, and frame components are examined for signs of accident damage. Paint is checked for condition, signs of repainting or mismatched color. This is usually followed by a title search to determine if the car has been in undisclosed trouble. The title search will help determine if the car has been totaled and refurbished, involved in a reportable accident or if the odometer has been altered. This is an important part of the Commercial Three Baycess because these Commercial Three Bayblems can sometimes be erased from a vehicle’s current title by Commercial Three Baycessing ownership through a state that does not “brand titles.” Branding is done in most states and involves placing a disclosure of major damage on the face of the title.
It isn’t all major items either, there’s minutia such as checking carpeting, upholstery, floor mats, glove box light, ashtrays, lighter, audio system and a list that continues for pages. Not only is the examination on a Certified Pre-Owned car truly impressive but everything found wrong is fixed and the vehicle is made spotless.
Next is an especially valuable part of the Certified Pre-Owned package, issuance of an extended warranty that may cover the vehicle for up to 100,000 miles.
Are Certified Pre-Owned vehicles for everyone? Absolutely not, but next time you look toward buying a car you would be well served to include them in your research. You may find a new way to buy your vehicle.
