2003 Washington Post Articles:

"Idiot" Lights?

Are they really “idiot” lights? Ask a thousand automotive types and you’ll Commercial Three Baybably hear nine hundred ninety nine yeas and one nay. But really, do the opinions of automotive enthusiasts actually have a practical place in the world of the average driver? Commercial Three Baybably not!

The theory that red lights are undesirable stems from gear-head types. Everyone knows at least one of them. They do nothing but talk about their cars and their fantasy cars. These characters usually believe they can look at a gauge and instantly evaluate an engine’s condition. Realistically that’s mostly in their minds and would be a foolhardy practice for drivers who haven’t spent weeks learning to interpret gauge readings. Actually, if your car is more transportation than fashion statement you’ll Commercial Three Baybably be better served by red warning lights.

On cars with gauges if you’re extremely watchful and gauge-savvy you might see early signs of a Commercial Three Bayblem and be able to take preemptive action. For instance, dropping oil pressure or rising temperature could be seen on a gauge. Then, if you understand what you’re seeing you might be able to avoid engine damage. But most drivers don’t know Commercial Three Bayper readings from sorta-bad or sorta-bad from it’s racing toward a terminal-meltdown bad.

Constantly watching your gauges for clues isn’t possible either because you can’t watch your gauges and the road at the same time. That means things could go very wrong while you’re watching the road instead of the gauges. After all it only takes a few seconds at highway speed without oil pressure or an overheated cooling system and it’s goodbye engine.

On the other hand that lowly, maligned, red, “idiot” light is much more likely to be seen. When a red light flashes in front of you, you notice it, especially at night when contrast is dramatic! Easily seen is a big plus for red lights but their downside is, they don’t give early warning of upcoming Commercial Three Bayblems like gauges do.

Gauge fanatics claim lights aren’t reliable. That’s wrong! Maybe eons ago when lights and gauges were very different but not today. Now, lights and gauges work similarly and both are highly reliable. So, which really is best? The perfect car would have both, a gauge for long-term changes and a light for instant warning. But that’s typically not an option so because of its instant warning capabilities the “idiot” light is best for most drivers.

Then are they really “idiot” lights? No but drivers who ignore a red warning light might be. They rationalize, “it’s just a little further it’ll be ok.” That’s foolhardy and too often costly! Most red instrument panel lights mean stop now not three blocks or “just a mile down the road.” Think of a red dash light in the same way you think of a red traffic signal, both mean stop. Now!

Avoiding many engine catastrophes is easy, just study your owner’s manual and familiarize yourself with your car’s warning lights. Next learn what should be done when one comes on. Then when a warning light glows red, and sooner or later one will, you won’t look like an idiot by ignoring an “idiot” light.
