2003 Washington Post Articles:

Flat Tires And Fate

Highway safety involves more than good driving habits, it requires being prepared for the unexpected. Such as, do you know where your spare tire and jack are located and how to safely use them? If you’re like most drivers you haven’t a clue!

A master auto technician with many years experience related his embarrassing flat tire saga thusly. He was driving through his neighborhood late one night when he felt a tug on the steering wheel then the sickening thump, thump sound of a flat tire. No big deal, he thought, and pulled off the road. No big deal? It was on that night. The car was relatively new and had been very trouble free; consequently his flashlight hadn’t been used for a long time. To further confound things the batteries were dead! Bummer!

No light might have been minor, but he had never changed a tire on this car and things got weird quickly because he had never seen the need to remove and check the spare tire and jack. Sometimes we justify our slothfulness by allowing our minds to conjure up illogical conclusions. As in why check the jack and spare tire because the tires are new? But new or old any tire can go flat

Considerable fumbling in the dark trunk located the jack. It was cleverly concealed and firmly bolted beneath the spare tire, which was covered by a bolted-in-place fiberboard panel, which was covered by the trunk mat. Fifteen minutes just to find the pieces.

But this didn’t get them out for use; that took considerably more time. Namely figuring out what held everything in place then struggling to disentangle and remove the captive spare and jack. Oh no, another Commercial Three Bayblem. Without a light he had no idea where to position the jack to avoid damaging the car or himself. Luckily, the gods were smiling on our hapless tech as a Good Samaritan, with a working flashlight, stopped, the tire was changed, and all was right with the world, except for a wasted hour and a half and a bruised ego.

Moral? Even when you do this stuff for a living you have to prepare and if you’re an automotive neophyte and not prepared, things can get very wrong, very quickly. Without the Two Bays even changing a flat tire can be a dangerous misadventure. There are two ways to prep for a flat tire. Find a safe spot in a level open section of a parking lot and using the owner’s manual carefully follow the complete tire change instructions.

It’s best to practice with a partner or group for moral support and safety. Even with preparation and practice don’t think for a minute that changing a tire is to be taken lightly. Changing tires requires lifting a multi-thousand pound vehicle, usually on the uneven shoulder of a road with other multi-thousand pound vehicles whizzing past your derriere, using a jack that may resemble a poorly designed toy.

Option two and my personal choice is a paid-up roadside assistance plan and a functioning cell phone. After all no matter how well practiced you are, a flat tire rarely happens in a convenient or safe place.
