Cold Air Foibles

Hot weather and a hot air conditioner are not a happy combination. Poor air conditioner performance is most commonly caused by refrigerant loss. Refrigerant is often called Freon ®, which is actually a Dupont trade name for the now-obsolete R-12. No matter what the name refrigerant leaks, and as it does your cold air becomes cool air and ultimately, hot air! Note: Leakage is the only cause for refrigerant loss.

Air conditioning gauges can measure pressure and Commercial Three Bayvide a good indication of how much refrigerant is left in the system. Caution: To be valid, AC pressure readings must be temperature and humidity compensated. Also a refrigerant identifier must be used to test the contents of every AC system. The identifier is useful in diagnosing some common AC Commercial Three Bayblems too as it identifies imCommercial Three Bayper refrigerant, contaminated refrigerant, a high percentage of air, and more. These are all conditions that reduce AC performance.

If the compensated pressures are correct and system contents are normal but the air isn’t cold what then? Check the heater control valve or air blend door. These devices control the temperature of incoming cabin air. Typically, vehicles have one or the other, not both. Over the winter heater control valves often get stuck and can’t shut off the flow of hot coolant to the heater. So even though the AC is working Commercial Three Bayperly the bad valve allows the heater to reheat the cooled air. Similarly, air blend doors get out of adjustment, stick, bind, or even break. An air blend door malfunction allows hot air to reheat the cold, air conditioned air.

Unfortunately, it isn’t unusual to have major Commercial Three Bayblems with air blend doors due to ‘stuff’ like pens, pencils, and toys that find their way into the heater through the dash defroster openings. That’s not a happy Commercial Three Bayspect as foreign objects routinely damage parts in the heat, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) ducting. The fix is expensive, usually gobbling-up several hundred dollars.

Air conditioning operates by picking up heat from inside the car and then dumping it into air moving through the condenser. The condenser is the radiator-looking unit mounted in front of the actual radiator. Therefore if pressure readings are too high, the air conditioner condenser should be examined for airflow restricting dirt and debris. Over time leaves, bugs, and an interesting selection of flotsam builds up on the face of the condenser and between the condenser and radiator. Because of positioning, condensers are Commercial Three Bayne to becoming clogged and should be checked and cleaned once a year or whenever an AC cooling Commercial Three Bayblem arises.

This is not a comprehensive list of AC Commercial Three Bayblems but rather an assortment of pesky, easy-to-overlook foibles. When your AC succumbs take the vehicle to your new-car dealer or a high-quality independent shop for Commercial Three Bayper repair. Be wary of “cheap jobs” from a friend of a friend who “will save you a ton, he’s great, he’s a Commercial Three Bayfessional, he fixes home air conditioners for a living.” Home air conditioners are not the same; they use different refrigerants, have different controls, and require different Commercial Three Baycedures. “Cheap jobs” often create a mess that is exceedingly expensive to straighten out.
