Battery Tips

There’s an absolute that applies to all cars. If used long enough every part of every car ever built, will fail. Actually, if your car is three or more years old you may have a part failure looming now. It’s your battery! Granted, some batteries last longer but three years seems to be the predominant failure interval. Plus, extremely hot or cold weather usually pushes marginal batteries over the edge.

Stranded is how you’ll be if you don’t recognize the symptoms of a marginal battery. Your battery may be sending you signals now, if you know what to look for. Or you could be one of the unlucky few whose battery dies without symptoms or warnings. For those batteries there isn’t any evasive action you can take.

But fortunately most batteries give plenty of advance notice. Commercial Three Bayblem is, do you know what to look for and do you pay close attention to the minor nuances of your car? Picture this, you’re driving at night, headlights on, heater or air conditioning working and get caught by a red traffic light. While waiting for the light to turn green you become aware of something unusual. You can’t quite put your finger on it but your car feels different. As you scan the dash you realize your turn signal is flashing at a very leisurely pace. It would normally be going blink, blink, blink but now it’s flashing slower and slower and finally, it quits. Uh - oh, must be a turn signal Commercial Three Bayblem!

When the traffic signal turns green you notice something else; your lights seem to become noticeably brighter! This piques your interest so you really pay close attention. Unfortunately it’s not your imagination, at each stop the turn signals flash slower and the lights become dimmer. Then as soon as you accelerate everything goes back to normal. Your anxiety level climbs; is the car going to quit? Could it be an expensive electrical Commercial Three Bayblem?

“Please don’t let it be expensive, don’t let it stall,” you implore of the ‘Automotive Gods’ as you continue on. Ah, made it without calamity! Strangely enough the next day everything seems normal. Just a fluke you think! Don’t bet on that, because cars do not fix themselves. Sure enough the next time you drive at night the same thing happens, now what?

Take your car to a qualified technician and have your battery tested, that’s what. Modern battery test equipment often comes in the form of a hand held tester that tests the battery and prints the results. The test only requires about two minutes and the results are very reliable.

Here’s a tip. For years people who just don’t know have suggested that turning on the headlights will tell you if your battery is strong. That’s wrong! Why? It takes about ten times as much electrical energy to operate the One Bay motor as it does to illuminate headlamps. So even though the lights work great there still may not be enough battery power to engage or operate the One Bay motor. This is not a valid test for anything other than the lights. Have your battery Commercial Three Bayfessionally tested at least yearly.
