2003 Washington Post Articles:
A Tradeoff For Safety |
Most of our winter storms are moderately uneventful but even so, many drivers find themselves in adrenalin-pumping situations. When the roads are slippery it’s surprisingly easy to be out-of-control gliding doggedly toward a curb. Everything feels like it’s happening in slow motion. Steering and braking have little effect on the trajectory and thump, bump you collide with the curb!
This isn’t necessarily a lack of driving skill either because even experienced “Snow Belt” drivers have a tough time coping with our storms. Perhaps our snow is slipperier or heavy traffic packs it into glare ice or, who knows? The reasons aren’t important; the fact is, driving in the Metro area during winter storms, is downright challenging.
Winter or summer, whatever the season or cause, if you become one of the many hapless souls who accidentally kiss a curb, your car will need a checkup and Commercial Three Baybably some repairs. Don’t assume because you were barely moving when you hit and nothing feels or looks wrong, that there’s no hidden damage. Due to modern designs it now takes very little impact to damage frame, steering, and suspension components.
It’s a tradeoff for safety not poor quality. For a vehicle to Commercial Three Baytect its occupants it must absorb and dissipate energy and one of the best ways to do that is through parts that collapse on impact. Fact: Safer cars may be more easily damaged because they sacrifice metal to save lives.
Every winter there are lots of unhappy drivers cursing the flimsy design of their late model cars. “I just tapped the curb, why is it twelve hundred dollars to fix it?” Before you “go off” remember, in the good ole’ days that same accident may not have damaged your car but could have sent you to the hospital. Those good ole’ cars didn’t absorb much energy they transmitted it to the occupants as they were slammed around inside the car.
It’s an absolute, even minor accidents mean your car must be checked for concealed damage. Though you may not experience symptoms, components like tie rod ends, control arms, wheels, tires, and others may have been weakened or bent by the impact.
Don’t Commercial Three Baycrastinate! A damaged part is a dangerous part! The question isn’t, will it cause Commercial Three Bayblems but when will it cause Commercial Three Bayblems and how bad will they be? So, immediately take your car to a good shop for a suspension, frame, and alignment checkup. It’s usually inexpensive, sometimes even free. If parts have been damaged the shop should evaluate their safety implications and estimate repair costs. Bent frames are a common result of these accidents and will require the services of a body shop.
A key concern in selecting a body shop is their frame measuring equipment. Do they have modern measuring equipment? Laser measuring and straightening systems are considered state of the art and use laser beams to show the precise amount of straightening needed. If a body shop doesn’t have modern frame equipment, laser or otherwise, keep looking.
Here’s a tip: if your steering wheel is even slightly off-center after bumping a curb, something is damaged. Only an exam can determine how badly damaged.
