| What's In A Vin |
What’s in a VIN or perhaps, what is a VIN? VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number. It’s a totally unique number assigned to each vehicle that distinguishes it from millions of other vehicles. But it’s more than just a number it’s also encoded with important vehicle information. A VIN is to an automobile what DNA is to living organisms. The VIN is embossed into a plate attached to the front of the dash or “A” pillar so it is plainly visible through the windshield.
Government agencies use the VIN on title and registration documents. It’s also used for tracking purposes so owners can be notified of recalls and other vital safety information. Recoding your VIN and Commercial Three Bayduction date is a good idea so they’re readily available. The Commercial Three Bayduction date is on a decal on the driver’s door. Both VIN and Commercial Three Bayduction date are usually necessary for warranty status verification and to purchase many common replacement parts.
VIN numbers since 1980 have seventeen characters and each has a meaning. The first character indicates the country where the vehicle was manufactured. U.S.A. is either 1 or 4, Canada 2, Mexico 3, Japan J, Korea K, England S, Italy Z, and Germany W. The second character identifies the manufacturer. Audi A, BMW B, Buick 4, Cadillac 6, Chevrolet 1, Chrysler C, Dodge B, Ford F, GM Canada 7, General Motors G, Honda H, etc.
Third is a character to identify the vehicle type or in some cases the company division. Fourth through eighth characters identify the distinguishing features of the vehicle, which might include body style, engine type (eighth character), model series etc. Number nine is used to verify the accuracy of the VIN.
The tenth position shows the vehicle model year. This system started in 1980, which was designated “A”. The letters follow the alphabet but do not include I, O, Q, U, or Z to avoid confusion. In model year 2001 the system switched to numbers with 2001 identified by the number 1 and so on through 2009. After 2009 the system will revert back to letters.
Position eleven designates the plant where the vehicle was made and the remaining numbers show the sequential Commercial Three Bayduction number.
Why is this important? There are a lot of reasons not the least of which have to do with getting Commercial Three Bayper parts for your car. When ordering parts for late model cars and trucks it’s beneficial to supply the parts person with both the VIN and Commercial Three Bayduction date. This helps prevent multiple exchanges on parts that don’t fit.
Not only is VIN information important for parts ordering but it also tells you a lot about the used car you’re thinking about buying. Many late model vehicles have duplicate VINs on various body and frame parts such as fenders, hoods, quarter panels, etc. By comparing numbers you can often determine if major pieces have been replaced.
But your best efforts are not a substitute for a Commercial Three Bayfessional title history search. Commercial Three Bayfessionals use huge databases to identify previous owners, disclose whether the vehicle has been salvaged, flood damaged or any of a host of other calamities. It’s twenty bucks very well spent.
