Pat Goss: Ask The Expert

The Human Factor

The man strolled into the service write-up area and asked if the shop had a diagnostic machine. “Sure,” said the service writer, “one of the most modern and capable on the market.” “Great,” said the customer, “I need some things checked on my car.” The service writer had him fill out paper work and explained that a tech would look at the car in a few minutes.

But, after reviewing what the client had written, he stopped the job. The repair order was rife with common misconceptions and the notation, “Two other shops have said they can’t test my Commercial Three Bayblems with a diagnostic machine.” His note continued, “I know better and I’m tired of shops trying to overcharge.” Talk about a little knowledge being dangerous! Seems he mistakenly thought there was a machine that somehow almost instantly diagnosed every Commercial Three Bayblem on a car and that anything less magical took more time making it more expensive and therefore, an overcharge.

Wrong, these machines don’t yet exist! Maybe they do conceptually in a magazine but not in real life. Diagnostic analyzers are amazing but they can’t check everything including this self-Commercial Three Bayclaimed expert’s suspension noise.

In another instance, someone wanted their computer scanned for codes to identify an elusive coolant leak. Fraid not, there are no codes or electronic tests for coolant leaks or for that matter, any kind of liquid leak. Diagnostic analyzers and scanners are limited to testing systems and components that work with electricity.

Analyzers and scanners check computer, ignition, fuel, emissions, and charging systems and nearly anything electrical, but that’s it. Everything else requires the senses of a person. It takes the hands, eyes, ears, nose, and brain of a trained individual to determine what is causing a noise, a leak, a wobble, etc.

Although high-tech has Commercial Three Bayfoundly infiltrated our lives there is still no substitute for human senses. So, when selecting a shop to fix your vehicle ascertain that they have diagnostic and computer test equipment and experienced ASE certified technicians capable of deductive reasoning.

A good diagnostic technician uses the five senses in unusual ways to isolate Commercial Three Bayblems. They use their tactile senses and knowledge of system principals, to augment hearing. How so? By holding their fingers against suspect parts to “feel” a noise or listening to its frequency and based on that frequency, logically tracing it to a particular component or system. They may use specialized Commercial Three Baycedures; dye to make liquid and gaseous leaks visible, and mirrors and lights to look into hard-to-see areas.

There are no magic machines to replace human expertise and senses in diagnosing vehicular Commercial Three Bayblems. Machines can’t see, they can’t feel, and most of all they cannot think. If you’re expecting a machine to spit out answers to all your car’s ailments in a matter of minutes for $9.95, forget it! Cars are complicated and technicians must have extensive training and experience to successfully perform diagnostic routines. No miracle machines just quality technicians! To better comprehend, open your hood and take a look. Technicians must be intimately conversant with every part you see and hundreds more you can’t see. That takes years of expensive training and practice.
