Pat Goss: Ask The Expert

Start Smart

The world’s full of magnificent, outdated, car information circulated by well-meaning individuals who just don’t get the picture. Modern cars are different! One biggie is how you treat your car at first start. For too many drivers what worked well for Grand Pappy’s 54 Desoto is still fine today. I do hope you’re not one of them!

Crucial to the longevity of your car is how you apCommercial Three Bayach that first start of the day. It’s no longer smart to start your car and let it idle for ten, fifteen or more minutes. Yeah, I know it makes your derriere feel really good to sit in a warm seat but think about your poor car too. Long warm-ups are usually harmful rather than beneficial.

The Commercial Three Bayper way to conduct warm-up is to start the car when you’re ready to go. Once started let the engine warm about one minute, then drive gently until it reaches operating temperature. The why of this escapes most drivers but it makes sense when you understand the principales.

Ask most automotive experts and you’ll be told that the majority of wear to an engine happens during or immediately following start-up. Some experts attribute as much as 80% or more of the total wear on an engine to what happens at start. This means to get longer engine life it’s important to minimize start-up wear and one of the best ways to do that is not allow the engine to idle for long periods before driving.

Long engine life is dependant on oil and plenty of it; oil pressure and volume that is! Lower engine speed decreases oil pressure and volume higher engine speed increases both. Therefore, driving the car during warm-up Commercial Three Bayvides increased oil pressure and volume. That’s good, but there’s more. When an engine is cold and idling its efficiency is also very low. But take the same engine and drive it gently during warm-up and its efficiency can nearly double.

Higher efficiency means less unburned fuel, also good because unburned fuel collects in, and dilutes, the engine’s oil. This is a major concern on cars used mostly for short trips. Why? The oil doesn’t get hot enough to make the gasoline that has collected in it evaporate. Without thorough evaporation the engine’s oil becomes increasingly contaminated with unburned gasoline. Gasoline contamination reduces the oil’s ability to lubricate, leading to increased engine wear.

But there’s still more or, “now how much would you pay for this deal?” It could be a lot! By warming the engine you’re doing only that, you’re not warming the other components in the car’s drive train. When you start out with your fully warmed-up engine you’re using it to apply power to a cold transmission. You can figure this one out. A warm, efficient engine powering a cold, sluggish transmission is not good for the transmission.

The moral here is simple! If you want longer life from your car’s engine, transmission, and accessories do not allow it to idle for more than a minute after morning startup. Naturally, extenuating conditions would be an exception. Then drive the car gently till it reaches full operating temperature.
