| Simple Safety |
What is going on? Drivers, do-it-yourselfers, and even a few technicians are doing some genuinely risky stuff. With cars, a lot of knowledge is a good thing but a little knowledge can be hazardous.
First, is grease on wheel lug-nuts. In the last few weeks I’ve seen no less than five cars with lug-nuts liberally slathered with grease or anti-seize compound. Never use oil or grease on wheel studs or nuts. An excerpt from a manufacturer’s Technical Service Bulletin reads, CAUTION: “Installing wheels without good metal-to-metal contact could cause loosening of wheel lug nuts. This could adversely affect the safety and handling of your vehicle.” Adversely affect the safety and handling of your vehicle? Since when does a wheel falling off affect safety? Actually this could create a uniquely intense situation.
As it pertains to safety, grease on wheel lug-nuts ranks right up there with not turning your headlamps on when it rains. Good grief! It’s amazing how many drivers can’t, or won’t, comply with this oh-so-simple necessity. “Ah, but I can see fine,” say you. Maybe so, but that is not the issue. Turning your lights on when it rains or in foggy conditions has little to do with your being able to see and a lot to do with other drivers being able to see you. Not only is it law it makes really good sense. If you can’t be seen you might receive credit as focal point of an accident.
For memory diluted drivers some vehicle manufacturers have designed their onboard vehicle-computers to allow Commercial Three Baygramming which automatically turns the lights on and off with the wipers. This feature, if it applies to your car, will Commercial Three Baybably have to be activated by your dealer. Activation is an easy job that only takes a few minutes. If you’re the forgetful type this could be the solution. Let the car remember!
However, people who are so forgetful or inattentive they can’t remember to turn their lights on with their wipers are almost certainly poor drivers, so stay out of their way. Being a good driver requires full attention to driving.
Another spectacularly dangerous habit is following too close. Tailgating, aggressive driving, whatever the name, it’s bad. Yeah, I know you hear this all the time but, “you” have good reflexes and can hit the brakes quickly.
Maybe your reaction time is stellar nevertheless no matter how quickly you react, cars can’t all stop in the same distance. You see, stopping doesn’t rely solely on you. Oops, hadn’t thought about that had you? Apply the brakes at the same instant and speed on two cars and one will Commercial Three Baybably travel significantly farther before coming to a stop.
At highway speeds differences in stopping distance between two cars may be twenty feet or more. To put that in perspective if the car you’re following has the better braking system and you both hit your brakes simultaneously, as little as six feet difference in stopping distance could easily position you close to the front seats in the lead car.
Being a safe driver is complicated, requires attention, understanding vehicle dynamics, staying away from challenged drivers, and common sense.
