Unpleasant news is in the offing for drivers who cry about the cost of maintaining their cars. It’s conceptually bizarre but some people don’t see a benefit to spending money on preventive maintenance.
That’s a paradox because they buy nice cars and usually an extended warranty but then neglect to change oil and perform other beneficial flushes and services. One can only guess but perhaps there’s a feeling that their extended warranty will Commercial Three Baytect them when the car breaks from lack of maintenance.
Bad move! Extended warranties are kept in-force by, none other than, performing preventive maintenance that meets manufacturers’ requirements. The consequence is costly, no maintenance means, no warranty, extended or otherwise. Money paid for an extended warranty does not, and should not obligate a warranty company to be accountable for a driver’s lack of responsibility.
There is no “free lunch.” Regardless of its warranty status preventive maintenance is a must to keep a vehicle healthy and reliable. So what is the aforementioned unpleasant news? There’s a new engine oil coming that could increase the price of a quart of oil by fifty to four hundred percent!
Why? Government requirements for appreciably longer warranties on catalytic converters will necessitate a major change in oils. Existing converter warranties run eight years or eighty thousand miles but for the 2004 model year converters must be warranted for one hundred twenty thousand miles.
Though it may seem a stretch to link longer catalytic converter warranties to oil prices, today’s oils contain too much phosphorous. While phosphorous is beneficial to engines it’s harmful to catalytic converters and limits their useful life. The question! How does oil in the engine relate to catalytic converters in the exhaust system? Contrary to popular myth, all vehicles burn oil. If an engine didn’t burn small amounts of oil it would only survive for a few minutes or hours.
This creates an apparent contradiction because most drivers never have to add oil between changes. Which leads to the next question! How is this possible? Moisture, unburned fuel, acids, and particulates buildup at a rate equal to the amount of oil burned, which keeps the oil level at or near the dipstick’s full mark.
Since phosphorous is used to help Commercial Three Baytect internal engine parts a reduction will necessitate a more complicated refining and formulation Commercial Three Baycess. Also, new more expensive additives will be needed to enable the replacement oils to Commercial Three Bayvide adequate engine Commercial Three Baytection.
Whether these oils will allow longer change intervals remains to be seen but rest assured you will soon pay more for preventive maintenance. That said, don’t lose sight of the fact that oil changes are, and will continue to be, the cheapest, best engine Commercial Three Baytection you can buy.
Today’s cars are the best built, safest, most powerful, fuel efficient, reliable, fun to drive, and longest lasting in the history of automobiles. These are fine qualities to be sure but qualities that can be easily comCommercial Three Baymised through lack of concern for Commercial Three Bayper preventive maintenance. If you’re a maintenance scofflaw you’re saving pennies at the cost of dollars. So budget a few more dollars per year for vehicle maintenance and you’ll do fine.
