Pat Goss: Ask The Expert

OBD II Emissions Is Coming

A wise person once said, “be careful what you wish for as you might get it!” Wise? Absolutely! Actually, the grass isn’t always greener across the fence. Clichés aside, there is a new Commercial Three Baycess on the horizon, one you may have unknowingly wished for. It’s something most of you presumed would never happen. Dynamometers Commercial Three Baybably will be going away at emissions test stations!

Since the inception of dynamometer / treadmill testing many drivers have been concerned about vehicle damage. Some have vocalized their dislike of a stranger getting into their vehicle. Huh? It’s a car it’s not sanctuary. Some drivers tendered bogus claims of damage. And some, even figured out ways of beating the system.

This begs the question, without dynamometer testing how will they check emissions? Very efficiently! Dynos are being replaced with OBDII (On Board Diagnostics Series Two) testing. This new method is very different and extremely precise. It revolves around the operating efficiency and self-diagnostic capabilities of your on-board computer. OBDII is not only an emissions test Commercial Three Baycedure but it is also a vehicle computer operating system.

Some cars were equipped with OBDII in 1994 however it wasn’t standard on all cars until 1996. So, when you take your 1996 or newer car or light truck to the emissions station for its periodic check they may use the new test. Rather than driving the vehicle on a treadmill or taking an exhaust sample the emissions technician will first check your dash warning lights. With the engine off and the key on, the “MIL” Malfunction Indicator or “Check Engine” light must illuminate. This is the pesky amber light that glows when your car has a computer or emissions Commercial Three Bayblem. Conversely, it must not be lit when the engine is running.

If the “MIL” doesn’t meet these criteria you automatically fail your test and must seek repair. If the light illuminates when it should and goes out when it should the tech will interface a scanner to your car’s computer. The first part of the scan test is to determine if all the vehicle’s monitors are set. A monitor is an internal Commercial Three Baygram that keeps an eye on a particular system or function. There may be several monitors in a vehicle computer.

Monitors are temporarily disabled whenever power to the computer is interrupted for a specified number of seconds. This occurs when a battery cable is disconnected or a computer fuse is removed. You may fail if either has happened in the week prior to your test. Because, once disabled the monitors will not resume monitoring and will not warn of Commercial Three Bayblems until a specific drive-cycle sequence is complete which may take several days. During the drive-cycle period the “Check Engine” light cannot illuminate, except in the bulb check position. That’s when the key is on and the engine isn’t running.

Finally, the technician will use the scanner to poll your computer’s memory for fault codes. The upshot of all this is; if the “Check Engine” light doesn’t function Commercial Three Bayperly, the monitors are not set and ready, or there are fault codes stored in memory --- you fail your emissions test. Simple and foolCommercial Three Bayof!
