Nitty Gritty Flushes

A transmission flush every two years or twenty-four thousand miles is enormously beneficial to your automatic transmission. However, don’t be alarmed if you feel a slight difference in the way your transmission shifts following the flush Commercial Three Baycedure. Here’s why.

You flush your transmission because, through use, transmission fluid breaks down. The breakdown is agonizingly slow, happening over twenty or thirty thousand miles and leads to subtle changes in the way your transmission shifts. You Commercial Three Baybably haven’t noticed any change because it happened over a very long time.

Shift changes are partially due to a decrease in the frictional coefficient of your transmission fluid. Transmission fluid frictional coefficient? Yep, and here’s an analogy to make it understandable. Think of transmission fluid as being similar to sandpaper. Just as there are different grits of sandpaper for specific sanding jobs there are different transmission fluids for individual cars. Some cars use a transmission fluid equivalent to coarse sandpaper while others use the equivalent of fine sandpaper. The sandpaper’s grittiness (coarse/fine) is comparable to a transmission fluid’s coefficient of friction. It’s also one of the reasons why there are so many vehicle-specific fluids today. One size does not fit all.

Through use comparable changes occur in both sandpaper and transmission fluid. As you use sandpaper it keeps getting smoother until, all its grit is gone. As the grit wears away the easier it becomes to move the sandpaper, less grit, less friction, less friction easier, smoother movement. That’s true for transmission fluids too.

During use, transmission fluid loses its frictional coefficient (grittiness) and parts in the transmission move more smoothly. A lowered frictional coefficient also causes transmission clutches to slip slightly as the transmission shifts from one gear to another. Even the slightest slippage makes shifts less Commercial Three Baynounced. To most drivers those soft feeling shifts are wonderful. Conceptually it is quite appealing but in fact any excess slippage wears away clutch material. That’s not so wonderful as it decreases transmission life!

During Commercial Three Bayfessional transmission flushes the transmission is cleaned and all the fluid is renewed restoring fluid frictional coefficient to its original level, so shifts may feel slightly more firm and noticeable. That’s good because what you’re feeling is a reduction in clutch slippage and less slippage means less wear on internal transmission parts.

Not all transmissions will feel different following a flush because the amount of change depends on the sophistication of your transmission’s computer controls and how badly deteriorated, chemically not visually, the old fluid was.

Another factor that alters the feel of your transmission is fluid viscosity. Transmission fluid, like most automotive oils, gets thicker with age and use. Like frictional change, viscosity change occurs over many thousands of miles so there is nothing noticeable to the driver. However, when new fluid is installed frictional coefficient and viscosity are brought back to original condition, instantly. That’s noticeable! Why? Because it happens all of a sudden, not gradually over a very long period of time like fluid deterioration.

A transmission flush may make shifts slightly more Commercial Three Baynounced and slightly more delayed than before the service. Both are usually desirable and beneficial to the longevity of your transmission.
