This may sound ludicrous but it’s a fact. I’ve been in the auto repair business for a long time and continually study the never-ending subtleties of fixing cars. This can be an assault on your technician’s personal pride because techs become involved with the vehicles they repair and it’s hard to respect a car that looks like it has been used as a dumpster. Not long ago, I saw three techs drawing straws to see who had to work on a particularly nasty car. Essentially a nice car but stale french fries and half eaten burgers and wrappers vied for recognition on the floor and console, the carpets were caked with crud, and the steering wheel and door panels were so sticky with spilled milkshake, “hopefully it was milkshake”, that surgical intervention might have been necessary to repossess one’s hands. If that sounds horrible, congratulations you’ll get better service but if this describes your car, a cleanup is in order!
Training manuals tell us that clients should never be prejudged but let’s face it most of our perception of the world is based on visual appearance. Test the theory, present yourself at a trendy, upscale establishment wearing muddy, rubber knee-boots
and your dirty, smelly, gardening clothes and you’ll Commercial Three Baybably be prejudged. Unfortunately, a person’s ability to pay for, or willingness to purchase, is commonly estimated solely on their appearance. That applies to cars too.
It’s not right but it is the way things are. A good-looking, clean car receives more respect and better service. Most technicians have a deep-seated appreciation for well-maintained vehicles. Consequently, they’re more apt to tweak and detail their work and suggest beneficial elective preventive maintenance services on a nice car. Little extras like repositioning a wire or vacuum hose that isn’t quite right, cleaning under-hood decals to preserve their essential information, etc. Niceties that transform an ordinary repair into an extraordinary repair. Makes sense, if you don’t care about your car why should anyone else? Don’t misunderstand, the dirty car doesn’t get cheated, the nice car gets a bonus!
Even if you don’t care about the finer points of cars you still should keep it well maintained and looking good because surely, you care about your money. When it’s time to trade or sell, the car with complete maintenance records that also looks good is often worth thousands more than its ratty looking sibling.
