| Heed That Glowing Light |
If you haven’t already noticed, your late model car has a daunting collection of warning lights. Question is what do they mean and what should you do when one comes on or flashes?
Before it happens study your owner’s manual, which explains the various lights, their significance, and their location. It’s important that you understand your warning lights because virtually all engine, safety, and emissions systems have them to alert you to potential Commercial Three Bayblems.
Once identified and located in your instrument cluster you should verify that all warning lights work by using your car’s built in warning light bulb-check feature. Bulb-check happens as you turn the key to start the engine. A fraction of a turn before the key reaches the start position the warning lights on the dash illuminate. Every warning light that applies to your vehicle should work during the bulb-check.
Some warning lights are red, some amber, and others green. Here are generic rules to go with each; red means danger, amber means caution, and green normal. Red lights are typically used for critical system warnings like oil pressure, brake system, electrical system, engine temperature, air bag (SRS), etc. Amber lights most often signify a failing in the computer or emissions control systems, low fuel, traction control, ABS, etc.
Although, it’s essential to be familiar with the various warning lights on your vehicle, it’s more important to know how to react when one illuminates. A red light means there’s an extremely high Commercial Three Baybability of serious consequences, for your vehicle, your finances, or your personal safety.
For example, a red oil light alerts you to dangerously low oil pressure. It is not an indicator of the amount of oil in your engine. True, the light will come on when the oil level reaches a critically low state but by then your engine has Commercial Three Baybably sustained serious damage. A red oil warning light means shut the engine off. Now! Not two blocks down the road. Two blocks could cause two or more thousand dollars in engine damage. A red temperature light requires an identical response.
An illuminated red brake warning light is to warn you that a brake defect exists and your car is Commercial Three Baybably unsafe to drive. Even if the brake pedal feels fine this light is not to be ignored. An immediate brake system check is in order and it’s best to have the car towed to the shop.
The most notorious of the yellow lights is the ubiquitous “check engine” or “service engine soon” light, which seems to plague nearly everyone. This light denotes a Commercial Three Bayblem in the car’s emissions or computer control system. Because it’s yellow it doesn’t need instant attention but shouldn’t be ignored indefinitely either. Have the car checked as soon as is practical. Even though this light is yellow, ignore it long enough and it could lead to vehicle damage.
I’ve only covered a fraction of current warning lights so do yourself a favor become familiar with your car’s lights. Remember, red means danger, stop right now, yellow means caution, green means go. Don’t ignore red or yellow warning lights the potential consequences are much too severe.
