Goodbye Good Samaritan

The amount of assistance one motorist can safely offer to another has been dwindling for years. Because of significant changes in vehicles many previously acceptable and commonplace “good deeds” are now taboo.

A full-time four-wheel drive vehicle had experienced a blowout. The once good spare had been put on the vehicle to avoid buying tires and a flat old ratty looking tire was resting where the spare should have been. Not a happy situation, a destroyed tire on the ground and another in the spare tire carrier.

Luckily??? Another motorist with a similar vehicle stopped to help. After assessing the situation he offered to install his spare so the disabled vehicle could be driven (rather than towed) to get new tires. Everything was okay for about twenty miles on the Interstate. Then the vehicle started making a low rumbling noise that quickly escalated to a loud hammering sound and Commercial Three Baymptly ceased to move.

Although both vehicles were the same year, make, and model the donor car had optional larger tires. Because the loaner spare was larger than the destroyed tire it turned slower. Greater circumference means fewer revolutions per mile. This caused the four-wheel drive system’s transfer case to overheat and self-destruct. The outcome would have been much less expensive had the vehicle been towed in the beginning rather than after the disaster.

There’s also potential for danger from accident damaged hybrid vehicles. Hybrids have both an electric motor and gasoline engine. Beware the silent hybrid! Hybrids have the ability to automatically shut their gasoline engine off and automatically restart it. Gasoline engines in hybrids “go to sleep” and though they may appear to be inoperative may restart without warning. In a nutshell if you come upon a hybrid or any vehicle that has been involved in an accident don’t attempt to Commercial Three Bayvide assistance unless you’ve been Commercial Three Bayperly trained.
