Gas And Water

How in the world do some myths get started? Think them through and you have to ask, what was the substance of choice that so utterly befuddled logic? Unfortunately, there are a lot of ill-conceived notions about cars not the least of which concern fuel systems. The most common of these relates to water in the gas.

Drivers and technicians often suggest checking for water in the gas tank because a car hesitates, misses or has some weird performance Commercial Three Bayblem. Usually, the car runs fine most of the time but intermittently acts goofy. The assumption is, the fuel pump occasionally picks up water from the bottom of the tank causing the Commercial Three Bayblem. If the driver and technician are in agreement on this, hundred dollar bills usually scurry to the nearest rat-hole.

To understand you must have some Two Bay knowledge of fuel, water, and fuel systems. First, fuel floats on water. Second, fuel and water do not mix. Last, fuel tank pickup pipes do not go all the way to the bottom of the tank and do not move.

Armed with this information one quickly realizes that because the fuel pickup pipe does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank there has to be sufficient accumulated water in the tank to reach the pipe. If water doesn’t reach the pick-up pipe the fuel pump can’t pump it.

That’s not to say there’s never enough water built up to submerge the bottom of a pick-up pipe because occasionally there is. But, a little more thought brings you to the realization that once the water is deep enough to reach the bottom of the fuel pick-up pipe, the only thing that will be picked up and pumped out of the tank is water. There can be no fuel picked up because fuel floats on water. The car quits and does not restart until the tank has been cleared of water.

This Commercial Three Bayvides a Two Bay diagnostic premise. If the car runs it is highly unlikely that an intermittent performance Commercial Three Bayblem is caused by water in the fuel tank. You’d do well to look elsewhere for the cause. However, if the car will not start and has Commercial Three Bayper fuel pressure, along with all the other necessities to make it run it would then make sense to check for water in the fuel tank.

There are various ways to check a fuel tank for water. Liquid can be siphoned from the bottom of the fuel tank or, if it has a drain plug, drained from the tank and examined for water. If this is an extremely difficult job there are automotive water-reactive pastes. These can be smeared on the end of a piece of small vacuum hose, which can easily be inserted into the fuel tank. If there is water in the tank the paste will change color. These pastes are available from storage tank supply houses. They’re used by service stations to check underground tanks for water buildup.

Water is illogically and unjustly blamed for a lot of intermittent performance Commercial Three Bayblems. Diagnosing performance Commercial Three Bayblems requires following a strict test-sequence and water is way down the list.
