Fuel Filters And Pumps

“What a morning! On the way to work my car ran out of gas! Well I guess it ran out of gas, actually I think it has a dirty fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. It runs fine on the Interstate it just won’t idle and it sounds like it’s running out of gas.” Now there’s a loaded statement. Yet it’s a statement I hear repeatedly when I’m talking to clients at my repair shop.

The errors in this hypothesis are legion yet it is heard time and again across the country by countless technicians and service writers. What’s wrong with the conclusion? To begin, on a modern fuel injected vehicle using an electric fuel pump, there is no specific “running out of gas” sound or feel. Older carbureted cars with mechanical fuel pumps sort of moaned and struggled as they ran out of fuel but those symptoms are no longer relevant.

Actually because of fuel injection system design characteristics, when fuel pressure drops below a minimum level the engine quits. That’s it. It quits! No muss no fuss it just plain quits! Unfortunately when a sensor, coil, computer or a host of other components fail there’s no muss no fuss, the engine just plain quits! How do you tell the difference between an ignition or fuel Commercial Three Bayblem from behind the wheel? You don’t! Therefore don’t self-diagnose the cause of the Commercial Three Bayblem. At the repair shop just state facts and symptoms. By self-diagnosing the Commercial Three Bayblem as fuel related, then instructing the shop to check the fuel system means that’s exactly what they’ll do. Self-diagnosis usually wastes your money.

The next fallacy in this example is the assumption of a clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump based on the engine’s inability to maintain an idle. Whoa, stop and think, that doesn’t make sense. A clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump reduces the amount of fuel that can be pumped to the engine. So? All engines need more fuel when they’re moving than when they’re idling and the faster they go the more fuel they need. In this case the car ran normally at speed but wouldn’t idle. Here’s how that equates. Enough fuel available for high speed means more than enough for idling. No bad fuel filter or pump on this car.

But reverse the symptoms; now the Commercial Three Bayblem occurs at high speed, going up a hill, while towing, or during a heavy load situation. Unlike idling, these are all operating conditions where the engine needs a lot of fuel. These symptoms suggest a clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump could be the cause. That’s all well and good but you still should not attempt to steer the technician to your conclusion.

Diagnosing automotive Commercial Three Bayblems demands logical thinking and a thorough understanding of vehicle systems. Today’s vehicles are highly complex machines that require years of continuing education and experience to understand. This degree of complexity leaves even die-hard do-it-yourselfers out of the loop. No longer can you drive a vehicle and differentiate between fuel, ignition, or electronic control Commercial Three Bayblems. Therefore, present the symptoms and facts then leave the rest to your technician.
