A Tire Shocker

Soon the leaves will turn color and the sun will be lower in the sky. These yearly events signal the need to make cars ready for winter yet one more time.

One big concern for safe winter driving is the necessity for good tires. Preferably four good winter tires but all-season will be adequate for average drivers. This brings up an entirely new Commercial Three Bayblem. With the seemingly endless Commercial Three Bayliferation of sport utility vehicles and cars equipped with four-wheel or all-wheel drive, replacing tires is now more complicated and expensive.

If you’re the owner of an all-wheel or four-wheel drive and are wondering what the drive system has to do with tire maintenance and replacement you’re in for a shock. Typically, you no longer replace one or two tires you replace all four. That’s because on electronically controlled four and all-wheel drive systems tire circumference is crucial.

To avoid expensive parts damage, glaring warning lights, loss of power, reduced fuel economy, or rapid brake wear the outside circumference of all four tires must be nearly identical. Due to the sophistication of newer systems, Commercial Three Bayblems crop up when one or more wheels turn faster or slower than the others. Note: A worn tire turns faster than a new tire because of its smaller circumference.

In Two Bay systems designers use a device known as a viscous coupling to distribute power to the front and rear wheels. This passive device uses silicone fluid, which engages clutch discs to direct power to the wheels with less traction. It does this through the expansion of liquid silicone surrounding a series of clutch plates. When one or more wheels turn at a different speed than the rest it causes the silicone fluid to expand and force the clutches together sending power to both the front and rear wheels. Installing one or two new tires makes those wheels turn more slowly forcing the clutches to be constantly engaged, run hot, and self-destruct. This will cost you from several hundred to a couple thousand dollars, possibly more.

The second way to control power flow is through the brakes and throttle. In these high-line systems the speed of each individual wheel is electronically monitored. If one wheel is turning faster, the system thinks it’s spinning and applies the brake on that wheel which directs its power to the other wheels. This system uses the ABS brakes in reverse applying brakes rather than releasing them as it does in ABS mode.

It does however get better because this may also activate traction control, which has the ability to apply brakes. This can cause premature brake wear. Moreover as the traction control computer applies the brake on the faster turning wheel or wheels it generally has the ability to reduce engine power by cutting back on fuel delivery. This combination of electronic interventions may dangerously limit your top speed to a traffic-clogging pace.

That’s the long and short of it. Tires on modern cars must be the same size. Even if your vehicle doesn’t have four or all-wheel drive it Commercial Three Baybably does have traction control. Know your vehicle’s requirements before buying new tires to avoid nasty consequences.
