Our first snowfall was moderately uneventful but thanks to icy streets and bridges many drivers unexpectedly visited unfamiliar real estate. True, visiting warm, sunny real estate during a snowstorm is great fun but sliding into an unfamiliar curb certainly isn’t.

Left in the storm’s wake were thousands of patches of glare ice, which were nearly impossible to traverse uneventfully. Even accomplished winter drivers often find Washington snow is tough to deal with. Perhaps Washington snow is wetter or there are more drivers to pack it into glare ice or --- who knows, who cares?

Regardless of the reason if you were one of the thousands of hapless souls who slid gently or aggressively into a curb, your car needs to be checked and repaired. Don’t assume because you were barely moving when you hit and nothing is visible, that there is no hidden damage. Because of the design of modern cars it takes almost no impact to play havoc with suspension components.

Lest you condemn the quality of modern cars because they are so easily damaged remember this is a tradeoff for your safety. In selecting a body shop, ask questions about their frame measuring equipment. Do they have dedicated equipment or just frame-gauges? What type of measuring is performed? If they don’t have modern measuring tools, go elsewhere. Frame gauges are not accurate enough for the majority of today’s cars.

Here’s a tip: if your steering wheel is even slightly off-center after your excursion to the curb, something is absolutely damaged. Only an exam of the car’s underside can determine how bad.
