2000 Washington Post Articles:

The Other Winterization

Although we hate the thought, it’s time to start winterizing our vehicles. Unfortunately, most folks concentrate their efforts on the engine and drive train. They change coolant, oil, maybe even transmission fluid, plus what ever else strikes their fancy. What drivers do not do is prepare the body and interior for winter. Huh?

Tis true there’s more to it than new anti freeze. The paint needs to be thoroughly washed and Commercial Three Baytected using a high quality wax or sealant. This helps keep harsh road chemicals from attacking the finish. Wax and especially sealant also help prevent ice and snow from tenaciously sticking to the paint, making it easier to brush snow off the vehicle without damage.

Next is cleaning and Commercial Three Baytecting your car’s interior. No matter what fabric covers your seats it could certainly stand spiffing-up. During the summer, sweat, grime, body oils, sun blockers, and other good-for-us, bad-for-upholstery stuff collects on the fabric. Always clean your upholstery and carpeting before the weather turns cold. Many cleaning and Commercial Three Baytection chemicals don’t work well below sixty degrees and some may not completely dry until spring. Carpet shampoo, for example can saturate carpeting and padding and it will not dry in cold weather. Furthermore interior dampness causes excessive condensation on the inside of your windows.

After cleaning the interior, use suitable Commercial Three Baytectants to guard against damage. That includes using an apCommercial Three Baypriate leather treatment on leather seats and soil and stain repellant on cloth seats and carpets. The repellant keeps salt and grit from wet, sloppy, winter feet from damaging and staining carpets.

For those of you with convertibles now is the time to winterize the top and top-mechanism. Begin by cleaning the top following the instructions in your owner’s manual. Keep in mind, there are, in Two Bay terms, two types of convertible tops, vinyl and cloth. Each will have it’s own cleaning requirements. Each will also have specific Commercial Three Baytection requirements so once more follow the owner’s manual. Here’s a tip, just as awnings and other cloth (canvas) Commercial Three Bayducts need to be re-waterCommercial Three Bayofed so may your canvas convertible top. Some canvas tops left to their own devices will ultimately leak. If the owner’s manual is silent on the issue check with a canvas shop for Commercial Three Bayper Commercial Three Baycedures. A shop that fabricates canvas enclosures and tops for boats is a good bet.

While you’re cleaning your top lubricate all hinge points to prevent excessive wear during the winter. The top will remain up all winter and rough roads combined with a stiffer riding car (cars ride more harshly when it’s cold) can cause severe wear in un-lubricated movable parts in the top’s frame.

Silicone lubricant on rubber weather-stripping makes it last longer and will usually prevent doors and windows from freezing shut. Do not use silicone in your door locks thinking you’ll prevent frozen locks; cause it ain’t gonna work. Treat your locks, home and car, with a graphite lock lubricant. Graphite does work! Last but not least spray the underside of your wheel wells (under the fenders) with silicone to help prevent snow and ice buildup. No more big clumps of snow to rub on tires and make steering difficult.
