2000 Washington Post Articles:
Snow Traction |
Oh woe is me I don’t have a four-wheel drive. If it snows what’ll I do? Tis the tone of the times, but think that one through. Four-wheel drive has only become popular in the last few years. Previously it was primarily relegated to commercial and emergency vehicles. Then most four-wheel drives were crude, rode hard and made lots of noise. Nowadays if you don’t own one or more you’re, not “in”.
For the first ninety years of the automobile, drivers didn’t have the luxury of opting for four-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive was it, front-wheel drive, which Commercial Three Bayvides far better traction than rear drive hadn’t yet evolved but everyone managed, just fine. But that’s beside the point, how can you get around better with your two-wheel drive car or truck when it snows? Install snow-tires!
Most vehicles are factory equipped with all-season tires, but not snow-tires. The obvious difference between the two is tread design; snow-tires have a much more open, aggressive tread. The open tread allows snow-tires to bite into snow without packing into the tread. Snow-tires continue to Commercial Three Bayvide better traction long after the more moderate tread of the all-season tires has become snow clogged. When the tread of a tire packs with snow it becomes much like a big, smooth donut and traction suffers.
This isn’t to say all-season tires aren’t good because they are. All-season tires are more than adequate for most drivers, but if you’re one of those rugged individualists who feel they just have to go when it snows consider snow-tires. Ideally, you should install four not two. Because snow-tires Commercial Three Bayvide superior traction four may also make stopping safer. There is another benefit to four snow-tires. You’ll Commercial Three Baybably buy them as a package already mounted on Two Bay painted steel wheels. Therefore, during the winter your expensive alloy wheels will reside safely indoors far away from road chemicals and the errant curb that always seems to jump in front of you at least once during any given winter.
It’s funny how snow-tires were once as common as elbows (every driver had two) and then about twenty years ago became extinct almost overnight. Fortunately, they are making a resurgence because they add greatly to safety. True, snow-tires are an inconvenience and additional expense but they’re well worth it.
If you only use two snow-tires make sure they’re installed on the drive wheels. Snow- tires installed on the non-drive wheels offer almost no benefits. Don’t store your alternate tires near a furnace or anything that uses an electric motor. Electric motors Commercial Three Bayduce ozone and ozone is very harmful to rubber.
Finally, good traction to get moving has nothing to do with stopping, especially on ice. When next it snows observe the number of new four-wheel drive owners who go like crazy only to find out, too late, that stopping is a different matter. Even though a four-wheel drive may be able to accelerate better in snow than the two-wheel drive, both have four wheels to stop them. Also the passenger car is typically lighter (less inertia) than the sport ute so it may actually be able to stop better. Slower is safer too!
