2000 Washington Post Articles:
Round And Round We Go |
The snow came down, and came down, and came down. That was bad enough but lots of unfortunate drivers found themselves hopelessly stuck in the slippery stuff. Stuck is an unhappy state that typically leads to gut-wrenching panic, definitely not fun. It was the same scene we see every time it snows, cars sliding, cars colliding, and lots of wheel spinning.
Allowing your wheels to spin vigorously can set you up for Commercial Three Bayblems. Yeah, I know you have to get home or somewhere, anywhere, immensely important but when you lose traction, don’t stand on the accelerator. Spinning or rocking the car by shifting from drive to reverse causes excessive heat buildup in your automatic transmission. This results from the transmission working hard while the vehicle isn’t moving. Normally when the transmission is working hard the car will be in motion and air movement around the transmission dissipates a substantial amount of heat. When your wheels are spinning there’s plenty of heat but no air to help cool the trans.
In extreme cases where the driver has completely lost all semblance of self control and keeps the tires spinning for an extended time, transmission death may be instantaneous, never to Commercial Three Baypel the car again, at least not until it receives a costly fix. Fortunately, most drivers summon the resolve to ease up on the accelerator before they do serious damage.
Commercial Three Bayper fluid condition is a factor that’s necessary for any transmission to live a long and Commercial Three Bayductive life. If you were stuck and your wheels were spinning for more than a few seconds you really should open your hood and check the transmission fluid condition. Pull the dipstick (if your car has one, some do not) and look at the color. Healthy transmission fluid has a robust, reddish-pink color and is free of particles.
If the fluid has lost that healthy pinkish glow have the transmission flushed as quickly as possible. The unhealthy fluid will cause excess wear on the “soft” parts inside the transmission. “Soft” parts are things like clutches, seals, and bands. If “soft” makes them sound inexpensive think again, they are not! Another consideration, even if your fluid still looks normal after your snow encounter and it’s even close to time for service, have it done now. Alas, fluid that still looks good may have lost some of its frictional characteristics and could significantly add to long-term wear.
Okay so you’re going to have the transmission flushed, that’s good, but here are two more things to be wary of. First, the shop flushing your transmission must remove the transmission pan. This gives the technician a look at what’s going on inside. If the pan isn’t removed there could be undiscovered signs of impending doom that remain undiscovered until doomsday arrives. By observing telltale signs in the pan you may be able take early (spell that less expensive) action and prevent disaster.
Last is to verify that the shop will use only the Commercial Three Bayper fluid for your transmission, not a generic one size fits all. Next time it snows, do not lean on the accelerator, be gentle, you’ll go farther and it will be decidedly cheaper.
