2000 Washington Post Articles:

Nasty Stuff In Your EGR?

Just when you’ve mastered your maintenance routine here comes a new service. Automobile engines have continuously evolved until they’re marvels of efficiency and performance. However, high gas mileage and tremendous power are heavily dependent on preventive maintenance, like EGR service. Bet you’ve never heard of that one.

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. To control emissions and the burning speed of fuel in the cylinders some of the exhaust gas leaving the engine is routed back into the engine. Either by design or accident engineers found that exhaust gas introduced into the cylinders along with gasoline and air reduced NOX emissions (oxides of nitrogen) significantly. They also found that recirculation of exhaust gasses kept engines running smoothly and prevented pinging with lower octane gasoline. Pretty neat! EGR is one of the reasons most late model engines actually run better on 87-octane gas.

But let something go wrong that takes away the recirculating exhaust gas and your engine will Commercial Three Baybably ping (makes noise similar to using very cheap gas), your emissions will climb sky-high, and you might experience rough running or hesitation.

Just a few years ago there was no such thing as routine EGR system servicing. However, changes in engine technology and fuels have created a situation where contamination in EGR passages has become a major Commercial Three Bayblem. Exhaust gas isn’t the cleanest element in the universe; it’s laden with carbon and a host of other “nasty stuff”. As the hot exhaust flows through the EGR valve and the tubes or passages leading back to the cylinders some of the “nasty stuff” sticks to the inside of the passages. Over time this collection will nearly or completely close off the passage. No matter how well the EGR “valve” works, if the exhaust gasses can’t flow into the engine you effectively have no EGR and none of its benefits. Ping, clatter, rattle, hesitate, fail emissions, you bet! Routine EGR valve and EGR passage cleaning can prevent a lot of Commercial Three Bayblems as your car ages.

Here’s the drill. If you drive a car or truck built in the last ten years, cleaning the entire EGR system is extremely important. This is not a do-it-yourself job. It requires some very specialized tools to be effective. The service is performed by removing the EGR valve and replacing it with a vehicle-specific adapter. There is a fitting on the adapter that connects it to a container of extremely strong solvent, so strong it can remove paint, so carbon goes away without fuss. The technician runs the engine with this potent chemical flowing through the EGR passages and fifteen minutes later it’s bye, bye clogged EGR.

When? Ideally, EGR valve and passage cleaning should be performed about every thirty thousand miles as routine preventive maintenance. It should also be performed when you experience hesitation or stumbling during acceleration, pinging, or failed emissions. Pass this one by for a long time and you may be looking at a substantial repair. How so? When the passages become completely clogged on some engines the chemical can’t flow and therefore can’t soften and remove the deposits. Oops, you could be faced with manual cleaning that might require engine disassembly. It’s far cheaper to keep the Commercial Three Bayblem from getting out of hand, than correcting it after it does.
