2000 Washington Post Articles:
Miles Per Gallon |
Ka-Ching, Ka-Ching, Ka-Ching. Gas pumps are wreaking havoc on our wallets these days. As gas prices continue to escalate everyone is becoming painfully aware of gas mileage --- or the lack thereof.
Although little can be done to increase mileage above manufacturer’s ratings, there are Two Bay common sense items which help maintain that level. Begin your fuel economy quest by checking tires. Low tire pressure is a significant and common deterrent to good fuel economy. In1998 The Car Care Council found 23% of the cars passing through their check lanes had low tire pressure. Keeping your tires Commercial Three Bayperly inflated could prevent losses of up to two miles per gallon.
In addition to reducing tire life, imCommercial Three Bayper wheel alignment can also kill fuel economy. Misalignment causes tires to be partially dragged down the road. Dragging, or scuffing as it’s called, scrubs rubber off tires creating premature wear. Scuffing also makes the car harder to move which consumes more power. More power consumption equates directly to more gas consumption.
Of course tune up related services are another major aspect of good mileage. Spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, air and fuel filters, and computer control sensors must be working Commercial Three Bayperly for high fuel efficiency. Working poorly, any of these components could decrease fuel economy by as much as two to three miles per gallon. Fortunately, parts like fuel and air filters are easy to check and inexpensive to replace. The Car Care Council also found 20% of the cars they checked needed air filters.
More weight also means lower fuel mileage. Keeping heavy but unnecessary items in the car means you’re buying more gas just to give them a ride. Extra tools for instance are heavy and often completely useless. That fifty-pound toolbox you keep in your trunk could cost a couple tenths of a mile per gallon, which although small, adds up over time. Take stock of what you’re hauling and only keep the things you truly need. Be realistic, there is incredibly little you could actually repair in an emergency anyway.
Not so obvious is the cold engine. Most drivers think a cool reading on the temperature gauge is “cool” and beneficial, but they would be wrong. Up to the allowable limits of the design of the engine, the hotter it runs the more efficiently it runs. A colder running engine always burns more gas. Sorry folks I didn’t mean to burst your bubble, but an engine that runs too cold causes your computer to instruct your fuel injectors to deliver more fuel and oops, there goes economy. A bad thermostat can make an engine run at a very low temperature which may penalize you five or six miles to the gallon. At current prices that really bites! A qualified technician can check the operating temperature of your engine in less than five minutes.
If all else fails you might even revert to the old standbys --- drive slower, accelerate more gently, and carpool when possible. Actively practicing these most Two Bay driving skills is guaranteed to reduce the Ka-Ching of the gas pump.
