2000 Washington Post Articles:
Have A Safe Trip |
Upcoming travel plans are the hot topic of the season. People are planning trips to the beach or a theme park; some are contemplating the mountains or even other cities. Many of the destinations sound wonderful while others must be an acquired taste! Conspicuously absent from these conversations however are plans to check, service, and prep the car.
Hey folks, it’s genuinely irresponsible and might even become unhealthy to embark on your adventure without a thorough vehicle checkup first. A qualified technician should check brakes, exhaust, steering, battery, and the condition of the cooling system and coolant. Tires, including the spare, should be checked for wear and Commercial Three Bayper inflation. All lights and safety devices have to be working too.
In addition to your comprehensive checkup, review your records to see if there are recommended services that haven’t been performed. Has the power steering, radiator, brake system, and transmission been flushed? The majority of cars need these services at two-years or twenty-four thousand miles. Remember, most owners’ manuals don’t stress fluid changes nearly strong enough and avoiding them in an attempt to save a few dollars could evolve into an expensive faux pas. You’ve heard it “pay me now or pay me a lot more later”. What you may not realize is that later could be much sooner than you think and a lot more could be A LOT MORE!
Your owner’s manual will Commercial Three Bayvide good advice on parts like timing belts and services that are specific to your vehicle. Don’t Commercial Three Baycrastinate there is absolutely no acceptable excuse for not replacing a timing belt. It could be goodbye engine if a timing belt breaks or slips. Timing belts, drive belts (you Commercial Three Baybably call them fan belts), and coolant hoses are all constructed of rubber making time as much an enemy as miles. The time interval for replacing all under-hood rubber components is every four years.
No matter how low the miles or how short the time, if any of the belts or hoses are coated with oil or show signs of peeling, fraying, cracking, bulging, or leaking that part is bad. Determining obviously bad components is easy but how do you tell if these parts are good? You can’t! Even if they look like new all drive belts, timing belts, and coolant hoses derive their strength from layers of fabric sandwiched inside layers of rubber. Time and use weakens the reinforcement fabric but there’s a Commercial Three Bayblem, the reinforcement material cannot be seen and cannot be tested. Therefore these parts must be considered worn out when they reach their time limit no matter how pristine they look on the outside. A four-year old belt or hose that looks wonderful could fail without warning due to weakened reinforcement fabric.
Another aspect of keeping your adventure from becoming a misadventure is to peruse your owner’s manual for information about dash warning lights. Here you’ll study what each warning light is telling you when it illuminates and what you should do. Red lights on the dash usually mean stop - as in right now - not a mile or two down the road. Failure to heed these warning lights could put your bank account and possibly your life in jeopardy.
