2000 Washington Post Articles:

Craaacked Windshield?

Craaack --- oh the sickening sound of a stone hitting your windshield. Did it leave a mark? Is my windshield done for? How much is this going to cost? That sound and those thoughts are commonplace if you spend much time on the highway. Fortunately, many damaged windshields can be repaired.

Starbursts, stone chips and small cracks can usually be repaired and at a much lower cost than windshield replacement. In some cases insurance companies will even waive the deductible and pay for the repair in full. That’s because the cost of repair is so low compared to replacement; it makes economic sense to some insurance companies.

That’s the good news but whether repair is possible or impossible is largely dependent on you. It’s imperative to get the car to a glass shop as soon as you can. The longer you wait before taking it in the less chance that it can be saved. Once the glass is damaged moisture, dirt, and oil may enter the break, making it impossible to get an adequate repair.

It works like this. Windshields are made with three layers of material, a layer of glass on the inside and the outside with a plastic film in the center bonding the two together. The plastic in the middle of the two layers of glass keeps the glass from splintering in the event it’s broken. The pieces of broken glass remain stuck to the plastic film preventing sharp shards of glass from flying around in the vehicle’s cockpit. It’s a great safety feature.

But I digress; in order to have an effective repair the damaged spot must be kept as clean as possible. By driving the vehicle for an extended period of time before having it fixed you run the risk of road dirt and especially oils contaminating the damaged area. Too much contamination may make it difficult or impossible to affect a visually, nearly imperceptible, repair. If you wait too long even the best repair may leave your windshield visually distorted, which, by the way, may not pass inspection.

A tip: Call local glass shops and ask if they have windshield emergency bandages. These clear plastic strips, they’re made much like a bandage, are peeled and placed over the damage to Commercial Three Baytect against moisture and dirt intrusion until you can get a permanent repair.

Another tip: Unless you’re highly skilled do not attempt a do-it-yourself repair. If you screw up there’s no second chance, Commercial Three Bayfessional or otherwise!

Have I made my case? If not, consider this. The weather is going to get cold and when it does, moisture that has collected in the damaged area of your unrepaired windshield will freeze. Start the vehicle on a nice cold morn, turn the defroster on high to clear the windshield, and in a couple of minutes craaack! Your little chip has become a full-fledged crack extending across the glass. Now there is no way to fix it and what might have cost nothing will cost you your full deductible. Bad economics? You bet!

Repairing windshields is like so many repairs. As a famous media voice once said “pay me now or pay me a lot more later”.
