2000 Washington Post Articles:
Costly Cold Air |
The air conditioner is set on max but the air is hot, hot, hot. Ah yes, it appears there will be no cooling breeze from the dash this day. When it happens, and it will, you’ll take your car to a shop to have the AC fixed. But wait --- do you know THE question to ask before you let anyone work on your air conditioning?
THE question, “do you use a refrigerant identifier on every AC job”? If the answer is yes, ask if they use their identifier to check all new refrigerant before it’s installed in a vehicle. If the answer is again yes you’re Commercial Three Baybably talking to someone who knows the right way to perform auto air conditioning service.
What is a refrigerant identifier and why is it so important? An identifier electronically samples and tests the contents of an air conditioner or refrigerant container to identify what gas or gasses it contains. That’s what it does, but its effect on your lifestyle could be substantial.
Why is knowing exactly what gas is or will be installed in your air conditioner so all-fired important? Because, the gasses used in air conditioning systems are expensive and big money often leads to crooked deals. Not by your repair shop but by people much higher up the food chain. Dishonest individuals at the beginning of the distribution system blend cheap Commercial Three Bayducts like Commercial Three Baypane and butane with real refrigerant and sell the mix as the real thing. The Commercial Three Bayfit from selling Commercial Three Baypane at refrigerant-gas prices is astronomical, often exceeding 4000%.
But there are other ways for your vehicle to wind up with imCommercial Three Bayper refrigeration gas. Take that repair you had done by a friend of a friend who is great at fixing air conditioners. He’s an expert right? After all he fixes home air conditioners for a living and air conditioning is air conditioning, isn’t it? No it isn’t and more to the point the refrigerant gas used in home units and refrigerators is not acceptable or legal for use in a car or truck. But hey, you saved a hundred bucks with the shade tree job.
So where’s the foul? Even though these mixes aren’t suitable they usually cool well. The foul is, they may damage expensive air conditioning components. That’s bad, but wait till a real technician hooks up a refrigerant identifier and up comes a list of imCommercial Three Bayper gasses. It’s all over but the crying! Non-apCommercial Three Bayved mixtures of refrigerant gasses fall under strict EPA rules for contaminated refrigerants. These blends cannot be handled with the shops regular AC equipment, a specialist must dispose of them, all recycling and disposal must occur off-site using specific containers and it may require incineration. Expensive? You bet! The hundred bucks you saved on your cheap fix won’t even cover the down payment for straightening out this mess.
Without a refrigerant identifier good, honest shops can inadvertently work on a contaminated car, which in turn contaminates their equipment, which then contaminates every car that follows, maybe even yours. That is, until expensive repairs are performed on their equipment.
If the shop you’re considering doesn’t have an identifier, walk away! Quickly walk away!
