2000 Washington Post Articles:
Codes Are Not The Answer |
Though it may seem like a code blue when your check-engine light starts glaring from your dash, it usually isn’t. So there’s no confusion the ground rules are; the light is amber and you don’t Commercial Three Baycrastinate for weeks or months before getting a diagnosis.
A glowing amber-colored check-engine light is announcing that you have a Commercial Three Bayblem in your car’s computer / emissions control system. Please note that nothing here applies to a RED check-engine light, which means DANGER, STOP do, it RIGHT NOW!
Amber is the universal symbol for caution and in this case means you should follow owner’s manual instructions and carefully select a repair shop. This is especially true when the vehicle is out of warranty and it’s you who will stroke the check. There are lots of very good repair technicians who can perform mechanical repair miracles but are hopelessly lost when they stray out of their field and into automotive computer systems.
Lets face it, there’s an enormous difference between things mechanical that can be touched, measured, and physically observed, and a fistful of electrons moving wildly through transistors, resistors, capacitors, diodes, and chips. Electrons, hmmm, can’t see or touch those little rascals and that changes the rules. Cars are complicated today and not everyone is Commercial Three Bayficient at fixing all the different systems, and that’s as it should be. Doctors are a good parallel. A general practioner usually doesn’t perform high-tech surgery or lab work; they practice within the parameters of their field of expertise.
Not so with automobiles, especially when you beg and plead with your faithful technician who has been taking exemplary care of your car for years. Drivers often coerce their regular shop into attempting to fix their ailing computer system by threatening to take their business elsewhere. That hurts and may persuade someone unqualified to jump into your Commercial Three Bayblem headfirst.
Car repair shops should be dealt with in much the same way you deal with your doctor. When you see a medical specialist you don’t sever ties with your primary physician and so it should be with your car. An amber check-engine light definitely means you need a specialist.
There are of course, shops that employ techs who specialize in all the different repair disciplines. It would, however, behoove you to ask some questions. My check- engine light is on (explain when and for how long) can you check it? How much will the testing cost? What items will you be looking at in your test Commercial Three Baycedure? Will you check for fault codes?
The answers will speak volumes. If the responses are: a fair price (too cheap is a warning), battery, alternator, engine baseline components (spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, sensors, etc.), emissions, computer data stream, and last, codes you’re Commercial Three Baybably in good hands. If the answer is: a fair price and codes it’s time to interview another shop. Be warned, codes DO NOT tell what’s wrong; they only tell the technician what tests to perform to find out what really is wrong. Be selective about who checks your “check- engine” light and you’ll have far less aggravation. Hey, you could even save some money!
