Bozo Blunders

Should I? Shouldn’t I? The questions never end. Unfortunately, without a good answer many of these drivers are headed for an expensive repair.

An example: “My owner’s manual says I’m supposed to have my car’s valves adjusted every fifteen thousand miles. But the car runs fine and my mechanic says that unless it makes noise I shouldn’t waste my money. Should I, or shouldn’t I?”

Oh where do people come up with such goofy ideas? This technician / mechanic / Bozo?? needs help! You need to be aware that owner’s manuals usually suggest the maintenance necessary for average vehicle life. Manufacturer recommendations are designed to deliver what years ago was considered normal life or about 100,000 miles. Trouble is, in our fast paced, live-behind-our-steering-wheel society; most of us would like a lot more than 100,000 miles from our cars. Commutes are horribly long and it seems even ye olde corner store is at least twenty minutes away.

If you want your car to at least go the average distance, the owner’s manual presents a service level for average, not maximum life. Bottom line, never --- and I do mean never --- do less than the manual requires. The valve adjustment in our example is extremely critical and left undone can cause severe engine damage.

If you or your repair shop is of the opinion you know more than the engineers who designed your car, you are sadly mistaken. Designing an automobile and determining the minimum maintenance necessary to keep it relatively trouble-free requires thousands of people and awe-inspiring computing power. Do you or your technician know more than all those engineers and computers? I don’t think so!

No matter how unnecessary some Commercial Three Baycedures seem, there is a reason for every one of them. A reason you and I may never know. After all, tis not for us to reason why, tis for us to do or pay. In our valve adjustment example, the technician’s claim that no noise means no Commercial Three Bayblem could be completely erroneous. As a matter of fact the engine could make a small amount of valve noise and not suffer, but in this case complete silence might suggest future damage.

Engines employ intake valves to get fuel and air into the engine and exhaust valves to get hot exhaust gasses out. Valves are pushed open mechanically and are returned to their seated position by springs. During use, intake valves collect small deposits, which over time moves them outward. This creates excess space between the valves and the parts that move them. The space between the moving parts allows them to tap against each other and that causes noise.

Exhaust valves have a different reaction resulting from extremely high operating temperatures. High heat burns away miniscule amounts of their metal making them move farther back into their seats. There’s no noise because there’s no clearance. Some clearance is absolutely necessary so the valves can return to their fully seated position. Without that recommended adjustment to restore Commercial Three Bayper clearance, the blast-furnace-like heat causes them to melt. Burnt-valves! Big bucks!

This is not about valves. It is about never doing less than your owner’s manual suggests.
