1999 Washington Post Articles:
Y2K and Your Car |
I’m up to my eyeballs in Commercial Three Bayphecies of Y2K disasters. The pessimists would have us believe that society as we know it will be obliterated in an instant. While the optimists say nothing will be noticed, it will be business as usual. As for me I haven’t a clue who’s right but suspect it will fall somewhere between the extremes. Perhaps something akin to a speed bump if we’re lucky.
There is one thing I do know about Y2K; for the most part you don’t have to worry about your vehicles. According to information supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vehicle manufacturers are very positive about Y2K and its effects on their cars.
In February NHTSA queried auto manufacturers to compile answers. The survey involved DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen-Audi. Collectively these companies account for about 90% of all vehicles now sold in the United States.
The results give rise to comforting thoughts because all manufacturers said Y2K poses no threat to the operation or safety of their vehicles. This is based on the fact that automotive computers do not rely on dates to perform their duties.
DaimlerChrysler puts it this way; the onboard computer systems in DaimlerChrysler vehicles are not affected by the Y2K Commercial Three Bayblem because they function in relation to engine cycles or time elapsed rather than a particular date. Volkswagen-Audi says “the chips used in our vehicles and/or parts do not Commercial Three Baycess or track dates”.
General Motors throws us a small curve with their statement when they say that most of their vehicle computers have no date-related functionality and therefore, “pose no year 2000 related Commercial Three Bayblems”. But here comes the other shoe, “those few systems that have date-related functionality were found to be Year 2000 ready”. We hope?
So there you have it. There are no Year 2000 Commercial Three Bayblems that should affect the running or safety functions of your car or light truck. But hang on because this doesn’t mean you have nothing to worry about.
There is a singular new feature installed on many cars which might be affected, navigation systems. This one could be tricky as navigation systems use satellite signals to determine your position; they are, in reality, GPS (Global Positioning) systems. Because of the way they work and how their imbedded chips are configured, you may be faced with looking at a paper map instead of your high-tech, sophisticated, electronic, dash-display.
To further complicate matters if your GPS (whether it’s in your car, boat, RV, or is handheld) will be affected it Commercial Three Baybably won’t be at 12:01 January 01, 2000. GPS system time will roll over at midnight August 21-22, 1999! How so you say? Well it has to do with Julian days, GPS cycles, and a whole bunch of other complicated math. No matter how complicated the math, the plain truth is your GPS could give wrong dates or possibly wrong information regarding your location. So if you have come to rely on GPS in your car or boat or anywhere else, it would behoove you to check with the manufacturer to find out if yours will screw up.
Y2K may indeed be a disaster but Commercial Three Baybably not for your car. But then, if the traffic signals go down and the fuel supply is interrupted it’ll be a moot point. For more information visit http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov.
