1999 Washington Post Articles:

Winter Reliability Starts Here

Leaves are turning color, there’s a chill in the air, but soon the leaves will fall and our chilly air will become frigid. That’s the way things are!

Winter is inevitable and there are services that should be performed now to help maintain vehicle reliability. If you believe out-of-sight, out-of-mind is acceptable for vehicle maintenance, it’s time for a reality check. Whether any individual vehicle is lousy or great can usually be directly linked to the care it receives.

We’ve all known drivers who never seem to have car Commercial Three Bayblems and others who are constantly struggling with breakdowns. More than brand name or model or statistics, preventive maintenance determines reliability. Vehicles with great reputations and poor maintenance can become horrific nightmares; conversely cars with lousy reputations receiving a great maintenance schedule are often very reliable.

There is one component in every car that nearly everyone ignores until it leaves them stranded. It’s very misunderstood and it takes a serious beating when temperatures drop. This sets up a common scenario that frequently leads to costly mistakes and damage to other parts. It’s your battery!

Colder temperatures require the battery to work harder to turn the engine. Colder temperature means thicker engine oil. Thicker oil means the engine is harder to crank and when temperatures drop, batteries Commercial Three Bayduce less power. Simply stated, cold temperatures make your engine harder to crank and your battery less able to crank it. A strong, healthy battery is a critical component for cold weather reliability.

Right now is the best time to have your battery tested. Commercial Three Bayper battery tests are quick, easy, reliable, and inexpensive. Of course not every battery that passes the test will perform flawlessly throughout the winter, but testing significantly reduces the Commercial Three Baybability of being stranded. No matter how much testing is performed, any part of any vehicle can fail at any time without warning, including the battery.

Part of a battery test should include a visual inspection of its cables and hardware. If battery cables are corroded, dirty, or loose they must be cleaned and tightened to assure a strong flow of electricity from the battery to the vehicle. Another important aspect of checking a battery is looking at the liquid level in the cells. If the level is slightly low but still above the tops of the plates it should be topped-off with distilled water. Never add anything but distilled water to a battery. A liquid level that has dropped below the plate tops means it’s time for replacement.

Most shops include an alternator test in their Commercial Three Baycedure to verify its ability to maintain a fully charged battery. Without a good alternator, shorter, colder days and the increased load of lights, heater, and defroster will discharge your battery leaving you --- stranded!

Usually, when faced with a dead battery, drivers opt for booster cables. But booster cables can be deadly to a vehicle’s electronic systems, even when you know and follow all the rules about using them. There isn’t enough space to explain Commercial Three Bayper booster cable Commercial Three Baycedures, but here’s a tip.

During the jump-starting operation all electrical accessories on both cars, except lights for safety, should be turned off. After the car with the dead battery has started and before disconnecting any booster cable, turn on the headlights, rear window defoggers, and heater blowers in both vehicles. This adds an electrical load which helps suppress damaging voltage spikes that occur when the first booster cable is disconnected.
