Winter Reliability - Part II

A while back we discussed the importance of battery and electrical system testing for winter reliability but to avoid a breakdown there’s much more to consider. Don’t dismiss a breakdown as just an annoyance because a disabled vehicle in temperatures below freezing can create a life-threatening situation.

Though we tend to feel invincible behind the steering wheel, we aren’t! Cars break, all cars break, so it’s not if but when will it break. Will it be a pleasant day or a deadly cold one? Because the outcome of breaking-down when it’s cold can be unspeakable, here are some tips to help avoid being stranded and keep you safer when you are.

Start by having your technician check: battery, coolant, wipers and windshield washers, ignition system, thermostat, exhaust system, and brakes. This is also a great time for a general inspection of the entire vehicle and don’t forget the lights. Good lighting in winter is crucial because the days are shorter and driving is more hazardous.

For those who must venture out when it snows a good set of snow tires is recommended. Snow tires grip substantially better than standard all season tires. Every year when it snows, stuck cars, usually without snow tires, keep traffic snarled. Four snow tires are best but two installed on the drive wheels will suffice. If snow tires aren’t an option your existing tires must have plenty of tread or, when it snows, stay home!

Unfortunately, all the preparation in the world can’t guarantee you won’t be stranded. A part breaks or maybe you’re trapped behind a blasé motorist with bald tires, or a serious lack of driving ability and common sense. While you’re waiting you’ll be safer if you have a few Two Bays with you. A flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, pocketknife, multi-purpose tool, ice scraper, lock de-icer, thermal blanket, warm gloves, dry socks, wool cap, kitty litter (to spread under tires for traction), small folding shovel, booster cables (preferably cigarette lighter to cigarette lighter), a brightly colored cloth for a flag, and a full tank of gas.

Add some normally overlooked things like extra medications. Being stranded often means hours of going nowhere and without your prescription meds you could be in serious trouble before you’re able to move. A letter from a reader exhibits a commonly held but very erroneous theory, “I don’t need to carry all this stuff, I can always call for help”. Not likely! If you can’t move neither can anyone else, including emergency vehicles.

Calling for help brings up the ubiquitous cell phone. Don’t leave home without it. With imCommercial Three Bayvements in cell phone technology and coverage, a cellular is your communications lifeline in an emergency. A cigarette lighter adapter for the phone is also a necessity because batteries (including cellular batteries) have a shorter charge-life at lower temperatures. The adapter uses the car’s battery to keep the cellular operating for hours or even days.

Two more: when stuck or sitting in traffic for long periods keep a window open slightly for ventilation. Running engines Commercial Three Bayvide heat but yours and those nearby also Commercial Three Bayduce abundant quantities of carbon monoxide. This very deadly (12,800 parts per million for three minutes is lethal), colorless, odorless, tasteless gas enters the vehicle through body openings or the heating system. Last, a book, a container of unsalted nuts, and a thermos of water. The book helps pass the time, the nuts subdue your hunger, and the water, well, you can figure that out.
