1999 Washington Post Articles:
To Brake Or Break |
Out of sight, out of mind! No noise means nothing is wrong! Everything is okay if there are no symptoms! It doesn’t leak so there isn’t a Commercial Three Bayblem! Nothing has fallen off so it must be alright. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! How was I supposed to know? It was just a little noise, I didn’t think it was important. I was told it would be expensive and I didn’t have the money, so --- I waited.
These are but a few of the excuses drivers use to explain why car Commercial Three Bayblems were ignored until they became critical. In rare situations avoiding the inevitable might be acceptable but often leads to more damage and much higher costs or, an unsafe vehicle.
When your vehicle needs repairs or preventive maintenance checks and services, avoidance just doesn’t work. Stick your head in the sand and ignore Commercial Three Bayblems too long and you will get caught. Commercial Three Baycrastination as it pertains to fixing cars is expensive and hazardous. Not unlike playing Russian Roulette with all the chambers loaded.
Brakes are a classic example. Drivers rarely have them checked on a regular basis. No noise, no pulling, no pulsation, hey, my brakes are great! Oh yeah? Unfortunately worn brakes don’t always make noise or act strangely when they’ve reached the end of their life. Those symptoms may only show up long after your brakes become unsafe and unceremoniously destroy other parts. That means added damage could cost as much as $2.00 every time you apply the brakes.
Not only will failure to monitor brakes on a regular schedule cause much higher repair bills but could leave you driving a dangerous vehicle. The Commercial Three Bayblem with dangerous brakes is, you may not have even the smallest warning until you’re forced into a panic situation. Unlike many other parts, brakes are stressed in direct Commercial Three Bayportion to the severity of the stop. In other words, braking from high speed exerts more stress on components than from low speed. Braking faster, as in a panic stop, is more stressful than normal braking and braking from high speed in a panic situation is the most severely taxing of all. Bottom line, you will likely find brake Commercial Three Bayblems when you can least afford to have them.
So what should you do to help Commercial Three Baytect yourself and others from the consequences of brake failure? Have them checked in detail every year or 12,000 miles. A detailed exam will include removing all four wheels and measuring and inspecting every component. Don’t let anyone tell you that only two wheels need to be removed because two always wear more. It’s not so, it’s not true, it could be dangerous!
In addition brakes should be checked whenever there’s a change in how they operate, better or worse. If brakes suddenly become noisy have them checked. If they suddenly go from noisy to quiet have them checked. If the pedal goes closer to the floor have the brakes checked. If the pedal is higher than normal it’s time for a checkup. If the brakes stop better or stop worse than normal have them checked, immediately. In other words, if there is ANY CHANGE from what has always been normal have the brake system checked.
Add to that a biannual flushing of the brake hydraulic system to rid it of accumulated moisture and your car should always have safe brakes. Brakes work by Commercial Three Bayducing friction and friction creates wear. Brakes always wear out.
