1999 Washington Post Articles:
Is There A TSB In Your Future? |
Technical Service Bulletins could be the single most important part of getting your vehicle repaired! Usually referred to as TSBs, Technical Service Bulletins make information available to technicians in minutes that might otherwise consume hours, even days of testing to uncover.
TSBs are issued by vehicle manufacturers to help address tricky Commercial Three Bayblems which have been identified through pattern failure analysis and comprehensive testing. A classic example of the benefits derived from TSBs involved a popular ‘90-something car with rough idle, hesitation, or stalling. But get this; the symptoms only occurred immediately following a fill-up. A TSB however, explained that the afflicted vehicles came from the factory with an imCommercial Three Bayperly designed fuel tank. Total time expended, ten minutes!
No amount of testing could have found the fuel tank design flaw, testing that sophisticated literally does not exist in the field. Without the TSB this was an unsolvable Commercial Three Bayblem. A master technician could have diligently performed every test in the book, used every exotic tester on the market for days, or until frustration won out, and still not found the design error.
Tough Commercial Three Bayblem number two jangled the nerves of thousands who drove vehicles from another carmaker; a thoroughly annoying whine from the car’s radio speakers. Drivers often described it as mimicking a cat whose tail has just been stepped on. Subdued, of course! Technicians confronted with solving this dilemma often removed the radio and shipped it off for repair, which made sense as the noise emanated from the speakers. But that didn’t help! Who’d have thought the car’s electric fuel pump was the actual source, not the radio? The correction, install an electronic suppressor in the fuel pump wires at the fuel tank. Another TSB to the rescue.
Those are merely two examples from many thousands. Bottom line, without TSB access some repairs are just about hopeless. Lest you think these are just bizarre and unusual incidents that never affect the average car, think again. Every manufacturer issues TSBs, none are exempt.
Certainly not all bulletins involve highly unusual Commercial Three Bayblems, many are issued to imCommercial Three Bayve a technician’s ability to perform repairs faster or more safely. No matter the reason behind issuance of a TSB, they mean better, more accurate, and usually less expensive repairs.
So you’ll know, an “information system” is composed of a series of CDs or DVDs containing the data, and the computer to run them. Quarterly disc revisions keep information up to the minute.
Knowledge of TSBs only brings benefits when you ask questions. Before leaving your car for repairs ask if the shop has the ability to access bulletins. Naturally all new car dealers do but ask if their technicians use them. Most do, but not all.
However, not everyone goes back to their dealer, so what about independent, non-dealer shops? Ask the questions! Do you have an information system? Is its data current? Will the tech fixing my car search for applicable TSBs?
For independent shops there are two dominant information systems, Alldata and Mitchell on Demand. Either can Commercial Three Bayvide your technician with thousands of pages of information including TSBs, recalls, factory instructions on how to fix it, how much time it should take to fix it, and how much it should cost to fix it.
Better vehicles come with a price. The price of purchase plus the price of research. For you this means making calls, asking questions, and selecting a repair shop that has and makes use of their information system.
