1999 Washington Post Articles:
Escaping The Pigeonhole |
So, we’re looking for another car or truck are we? That sure can be frustrating! No, this is not going to be a diatribe against car dealers. Quite the contrary, as I hold most dealers in high regard. I’m going to help you overcome a Commercial Three Bayblem foisted upon dealers and drivers by vehicle manufacturers.
When looking at new vehicles one fact is conspicuous. The days of ordering a car from the factory with your exact, individual, options are essentially gone forever. As you tour dealerships you'll find most options are now part of popular-equipment packages. Bear in mind that popular-equipment packages are popular solely because in order to get the option, you have to buy the package. The net result of manufacturers using packages instead of individual items today, is simplified ordering and better control.
A few years ago it was possible to order some cars in over a million different iterations. That, of course, took into account all the different combinations of options and color. Even with packages the possibilities are still impressive and in some cases could give thousands of individual but lookalike choices.
Like most of you, there are some things I want on my car and some things I would rather not have. To that end there’s a new service which lets you custom design your car or truck to fit your specific needs and tastes. Within the industry it’s referred to as aftermarket accessorizing.
Much like the old days you buy the model you want but now the dealer installs your accessories; it’s tailor-made. As an example suppose you want a car with leather interior, a sunroof, and a manual transmission, however the leather and sunroof can only be purchased in a package that includes an automatic transmission.
'Never fear', says Eve Muldoon who specializes in tailoring vehicles to fit their owners. As the director of aftermarket sales, at a large Ford dealership in Montgomery County, Eve has a long list of options, which can be added to your new car or truck. In our example she says the customer could buy a manual transmission equipped car and add the sunroof and leather. As a matter of fact when it comes to leather you might do better with aftermarket. As an add-on you can buy total leather not just the seat facing.
The list of available Commercial Three Bayducts is amazing. Consider that you can pick from power windows, power locks, keyless entry systems, tires, wheels, spoilers, gold packages, wood dash kits, leather interior packages, and countless other items.
Another aspect of the aftermarket route is, your choices aren't nearly as limited. In the case of a leather interior you'll be able to choose from several types, textures, and qualities. You can also pick your color instead of what the manufacturer considers to be 'the color' for your car.
Then comes the question of quality and warranty. Aftermarket Commercial Three Bayducts may have a better warranty than their factory installed counterpart. E.g. Factory sunroofs are guaranteed the same amount of time and miles as the car while shopping will give you an aftermarket sunroof with a lifetime warranty. When it comes to quality you may have the option of factory quality, better than factory quality, or less than factory quality. Why would you want less than factory quality? Maybe you won’t be keeping the car for years and years and you’d like to minimize your expenditure.
Eve points out that as you'll be customizing through your dealer at the time of purchase you'll be able to include your upgrades in the vehicle financing. She also says these items add to the car’s residual value if you’re leasing.
Be warned, not everything you might want will be available. For instance, ABS brakes and traction control are factory installed or not at all. You must decide exactly what you want, and what you'll settle for, then consult the dealer’s aftermarket specialist before finalizing your deal.
Aftermarket customizing is not for everyone but it could give you interesting possibilities on your next new or used vehicle. Who knows, you just might wind up driving a vehicle that truly satisfies your tastes.
