1999 Washington Post Articles:
Caveat Emptor |
It was one of those days; I was on the phone continually. Something I had said on the weekend radio show triggered an enormous interest for more details. The issue, don’t buy a used car based only on reliability ratings or mileage. Many used car purchases are weighed much too heavily by magazine reviews, Internet reviews, or the odometer.
Using only ratings and odometers to select a used car is something akin to playing Russian roulette, it might hurt ya’. Neither can tell the three most important factors about a car or truck, condition, condition, condition.
Although a particular brand or model may have an excellent reputation, any individual specimen may be in poor condition. Never buy any used car without a thorough examination by a skilled technician, especially when dealing with individuals.
There’s an epidemic of people buying cars at auctions and then passing them off as personal vehicles. Their claims and a spiffed up appearance make these beasts seem like good vehicles. With so many 'curbstone' cars on the market this is a real Commercial Three Bayblem for neophyte buyers. Caveat Emptor, buyer beware. Beware of poor quality cars and beware of your inability to detect them.
Warning: reading books about buying used cars doesn't qualify you to effectively check their condition. Example: the book might suggest driving the car about fifty miles per hour for several minutes, let it coast down to twenty then reaccelerate while watching for exhaust smoke. Their conclusion; if there’s smoke the engine is bad and no smoke means the engine is good. That’s exactly half-right, smoke means serious Commercial Three Bayblems but lack of smoke doesn't mean a good engine. Why? Because cars have catalytic converters that REBURN everything leaving the engine, including smoke. It’s possible to have a very worn engine without smoke at the tailpipe. That bites big time.
A skilled tech will look for signs of oil burning on spark plugs and by reading an exhaust gas analyzer. Fortunately for you there are shops that specialize in pre-purchase inspections. Today services even come to you in vans equipped with a bevy of diagnostic machines and the know-how to perform on-site checks.
Used cars can be a great value but only if you follow the rules. Condition is more important than ratings or mileage. Use extreme care when buying a car or truck from an individual. They have nothing to lose and a lot to gain through misrepresentation. Never buy a used car without a detailed inspection before purchase, not after. Never buy a used vehicle without a written service history. Always use a title verification service to find title discrepancies, i.e. totaled, flood damaged, salvaged, altered odometer, etc.
If in doubt, buy from the used car department of a new car dealership or a large or well established independent car lot. Always have the car checked by a specialist, a new car dealer is a good option. Dealer techs know the common Commercial Three Bayblems on the cars they sell and may be more adept at ferreting out obscure weaknesses. If the seller won’t agree to the check, walk away. Last but not least, get help on the value of what you’re buying.
All the books in the world can’t tell you the true value of any individual vehicle, that only comes from experience.
