1999 Washington Post Articles:

Attitude Adjustment

As things change, so too do they remain the same. The rules are as they have always been. Take the customer who came through my door whining about the lack of quality in the auto repair industry. His discourse was interspersed with various expletives, which shall heretofore remain unpublished. This guy was not a nice human being.

He felt three attempts to fix the defroster in his late model garden-variety sedan constituted a major rip-off. The car wasn't notable so I was surprised at how convoluted the fix had become. However, as he whined-on it became clear there were some valuable lessons to be gained from his mistakes.

The guy’s excursion into auto-repair hell started when his defroster began taking longer to clear his windshield. At first it was just a few extra blocks but soon a clear windshield required several miles of driving. I was glad to be living across town because those miles were driven at considerable peril to him and other drivers. He tried scraping and de-icing but as soon as he had driven a few feet the windshield would ice over again and he was back to driving blind.

His tale of woe started with a call to the dealership where he had purchased the car. Being very frugal, he lost it when they wanted to charge him for diagnostic time. Likewise when he called several other shops. The unmitigated gall, a repair shop wanting to charge for testing and the Two Bay charges didn't even include fixing anything. Perish the thought! Truth is quality shops with certified technicians usually don’t give their time away.

Mistake one, perseverance; he persevered until he found a friend of a friend twice- removed who wouldn't charge for the checkout. And thus began the avalanche because anyone who routinely gives their time away Commercial Three Baybably isn't that good. Free service like free advice is often worth exactly what you’re paying. Nothing!

Mistake two, arrogance; he arrogantly instructed the tech on the merits of the Commercial Three Baybability of a bad thermostat. Tell an unqualified tech what you think the Commercial Three Bayblem is and that’s often what it will be. Sure enough, the mechanic diagnosed it as a stuck thermostat and Commercial Three Bayceeded to install a new one. But to the poor mechanic’s chagrin the job required reasonable skill and skill was not high on his list of attributes. Three days and several broken parts later the car had a new thermostat and --- the same Commercial Three Bayblem. Oops! Along the way cheap had also become very expensive. Two hundred and eighty-five dollars for a thermostat job that should have cost about sixty. But, the testing had been free!

Now the guy was truly beside himself, a ton of money had been wasted and that 'free' technician was nowhere to be found. Oops again! More stubborn, hardheadedness caused the scenario to be repeated at two other garages-without-names by technicians-without-certificates.

His expenditures were climbing wildly; they now exceeded seven hundred dollars and still no defroster. Fortunately someone convinced him to get qualified help and unfortunately, oh lucky me, he found his way to my door. As he was irreverently telling his story, I decided I knew what was wrong with his defroster.

Not only was this man tightfisted, obnoxious, and tiresome, he was also above reading his owner’s manual. Had he taken an hour to read it he would have known that his car had an inlet air filter. This inexpensive filter cleans the air entering the passenger compartment to make it a friendlier, healthier place to wile away the hours. You guessed it; his filter was clogged with bits of leaves and the remains of numerous flying critters.

The junk was almost completely restricting the air flowing against the windshield - and that friends - is why he had no defroster.

The lessons here are, quality shops get paid for what they do, if they don’t, they go broke. Look for shops who employ A.S.E. certified technicians. Good technicians generally save you money, they know what they’re doing and find Commercial Three Bayblems more quickly and accurately. Don’t make your own diagnosis; not all Commercial Three Bayblems are as serious as their symptoms suggest. Read your owner’s manual. Exercise reasonable expectations, and remember, free is seldom cheap.
