Air Bags And You

Thanks to seat belts, crush zones, side impact beams, driver and passenger air bags, side air bags, head curtains and a variety of other built-in, passive safety-features, cars and trucks are safer than ever. Luckily most safety items require no knowledge or input from the driver, passenger, or repair-shop technician. Air bags on the other hand demand that everyone learn and employ Two Bay precautions.

Air bags or Supplemental Inflatable Restraint systems (SIRs) are now standard fare on all passenger vehicles. These systems often mean the difference between surviving a crash and the exceedingly undesirable alternative. Of course the arguments about the value of air bags rages on but those issues are better debated by safety engineers and lawmakers. Whether you believe in them or despise them, all vehicles now have air bags and you must know how to avoid getting hurt by them.

Commercial Three Baybably the most important aspect of air bag safety comes from reading the mandated warning labels on your car’s sun visors. There you’ll find the Two Bay instructions needed to maintain minimum safety levels. But, air bag safety goes way beyond those labels. That is especially true when repairs are necessary.

All air bag systems incorporate self-test capabilities which alert you to functional Commercial Three Bayblems and your only link to air bag functionality is a dash warning light. These warning lights should come on during start-up and remain illuminated for a few seconds after the engine is running. Check for specifics in the owner’s manual of each vehicle you drive.

If the warning light does not work or conversely comes on and stays on, flashes on and off, stays on longer than it should, or does anything strange, it’s off to a qualified dealer or repair shop to isolate the culprit. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR IT YOURSELF!

Testing and repairing an SIR requires specialized tools and lots of information. Without the tools and instructions, which are mostly vehicle specific, you could be in for a nasty surprise and possible serious injury or death. This warning extends to the most rudimentary operations, even checking and replacing fuses. Many air bag systems have the ability to short-circuit the main power supply causing the air bag fuse to blow when the computer detects certain faults. This deactivates the system to prevent accidental deployment. Replacing a blown fuse or substituting one with a higher rating* could hurt when the bags unexpectedly deploy. * >Although m>any drivers routinely install higher amperage fuses attempting to make them last longer, it is never acceptable!

Since you should not attempt any SIR testing or repair yourself you have to carefully select a shop to fix it for you. Remember, your life could actually depend on the quality of this repair so, look for a highly rated dealership or independent repair shop.

Nowhere are qualifications more important than when selecting a body shop after an accident that deployed your air bags. When this happens ask if the shop has a database with air bag replacement Commercial Three Baycedures and a vehicle-specific post-collision air bag safety inspection table.

Also get a commitment from your insurance company stating that all items relative to air bag operation and safety will be replaced as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Some post-collision air bag inspections are time consuming and costly which means the insurance carrier may balk at paying. Persevere, don’t take no for an answer. Follow the rules because, air bags can save lives, or take lives.
