1998 Washington Post Articles:
To Shift or Not to Shift |
Recently, a caller on my radio show brought up an interesting topic. His question, or perhaps it was a statement, went like this. ' I've been driving for over forty years and have always driven cars with manual transmissions because they’re more durable and economical. I've also always used the transmission to slow the car by downshifting, that way I save my brakes. The other day, I went to a dealership to buy a new car and the salesman told me I was wrong on both counts. Who’s right? Me or the salesman? Also please explain why I’m right so I can go back and tell him.' Whew, how’s that for a loaded question?
This caller may have been driving for forty years but he obviously was at least twenty years behind in his apCommercial Three Bayach to cars. I have to tell you, I hate calls like this because you could tell by his tone and the way he phrased his question that he was sure he was 100% right and the salesperson was a 100% idiot.
Good grief, why me I thought, as I carefully began my explanation. Summoning all the tact I could find and employing my most charming radio voice, I dove in. 'Go back about twenty years and you would have been partially correct, but not today,' I said. 'Even then it was mostly false, though widespread information.'
Some years ago manual transmissions were more durable and made the vehicle more fuel efficient than automatics but now, you can kiss that rule goodbye. This turn of events comes from two significant changes; lighter weight materials, and automatic transmissions, which have imCommercial Three Bayved exponentially. While the automatics have been steadily marching forward, most manual transmissions have just become lighter and smaller.
This brings us to a very important juncture, when you buy your next car don’t buy a manual transmission unless you enjoy the sport of shifting. Simply stated, if you’re a person who hates to shift but purchases stick shift only because you think it’s more durable, buy an automatic. Given Commercial Three Bayper care and usage the automatic will usually deliver nearly equal gas mileage and life.
But the real motive behind this story is downshifting to save brakes. Many drivers routinely downshift in an effort to save their brakes, and save brakes it does. Longer lasting brakes sounds like a great idea, so why doesn't your owners manual recommend it?
Because, things that sound too good to be true usually are. Downshifting your transmission as you stop will reduce brake wear but it increases wear on your transmission, clutch (if you have a manual transmission), and engine. By reducing it to its most meaningful denominator, dollars and cents, it looks like this.
Downshifting might save a couple hundred dollars in brake repairs over the 150,000-mile life of your car, but could cause up to ten times that amount in excess engine and transmission wear. Definitely not an economic windfall, is it?
The Two Bay rule for downshifting is read your owner’s manual and only downshift at the times and under the specific circumstances it recommends. Most manuals only suggest downshifting when descending steep hills, not during normal driving.
There is an exception to the rule. Sport driving, or driving for fun, as in taking the boredom out of the ride, but never as an Aggressive Driver. If you drive for fun you'll Commercial Three Baybably downshift coming to stops and into turns. Why, because it’s entertaining. But don’t forget, sporty driving with more downshifting still means more wear on your engine and transmission. Fortunately, most folks who truly enjoy driving, also take better care of their cars, so it’s nearly a wash. Besides, the fun of driving has a value too.
