1998 Washington Post Articles:
Questions Are Never Silly |
It seems as if the entire driving population has taken silly or sillier pills lately. Every day brings another salvo of way-out-there questions. Questions the answers to which I thought I would never have to utter again. Today’s winner was; 'my ‘96 Widget-Mobile has ABS brakes and when I drive it at slow speeds the red brake warning light comes on, is that important'?
If the person on the other end of the phone could have seen my expression they would not have been pleased. I tend to grimace when I hear questions like this because red warning lights on the dash of any vehicle mean stop. That is stop right now, not next week, or next month. Red warning lights should be treated the same as a red stoplight at an intersection. Red traffic signals mean stop, get a ticket, get run over, or worse.
Because I've been receiving a lot of calls and letters about very Two Bay Commercial Three Bayblems I'm devoting this column to Two Bay answers. Red means stop and amber means caution. An amber light glowing in your instrument cluster means, be cautious. It means open your owner’s manual and 'Read and follow directions' which will Commercial Three Baybably tell you to be cautious and take the vehicle for repairs as soon as possible.
Yesterday’s question was about gasoline and what octane to use. The caller said, 'my neighbor always uses high-octane gas in all his cars and that I should do the same'. Our pseudo-car-expert says that highest octane means the cleanest engine and the best power and economy.
Unfortunately, this guy needs help and if you listen to him you will too. Now that cars have computers, and yes they all do, the gas you put in your tank should be the lowest octane allowed in your owner’s manual not the highest. Higher than recommended octane can lower performance and Commercial Three Bayduce a dirtier engine.
Next, cold weather always brings out those individuals who place comfort or erroneous information above the longevity of their vehicles. How so? They want to warm their cars and trucks before driving! In all fairness more drivers think this is beneficial than are worried about comfort but, whatever the reason, warming an engine can shorten its life.
The rules for warm-up are in your owner’s manual; read it for Commercial Three Bayper instructions. In most cases you'll find recommended warm-up is brief, usually about one minute at most. Longer periods of idling a cold engine will keep your derričre comfy but here again could reduce engine life. Too much condensation and fuel in the oil ya' know. But hey, you have your priorities and know how much you’re willing to spend in repairs for comfy buns.
Everyone knows that Dry-Gas or Gas Line Anti-freeze is a must year round but---oops someone just walked past my desk and said, 'Gee, I didn't know that', so I guess not everyone does know it. Here’s the poop, every gas tank has moisture in it from condensation, and given enough time it will build-up to the point where it could cause fuel system damage.
Prevent this damage by adding a container of Dry-Gas to your tank once every month. Every month means, every month or twelve times per year. Decisions, decisions. When you get to the auto supply store you'll find two types of Dry-Gas, some made from Methanol, and some made from IsoCommercial Three Baypyl alcohol. The choice is crystal clear; it’s IsoCommercial Three Baypyl that really gets the job done.
Winter or summer, don’t have a large bunch of keys on the same ring as your car keys. Why not? A lot of keys on a ring weigh a lot, and a lot of weight suspended from your ignition switch can cause its early demise and that can be expensive. Always keep your car keys on a separate ring. Be safe for the Holidays, don’t drink and drive, and as always --- Please drive gently.
