1998 Washington Post Articles:
Don't Fall In Love |
When ever you buy a new car or truck there comes a point when decisions have to be made and the vehicle has to be checked. But first let me dispel a commonly held belief. Contrary to what you may have heard, car dealers want you to be happy with your new car and they want you to be pleased with them. That’s important to remember because everything I’m going to discuss is based on this fact. Also don’t forget there’s more to buying a new car than checking its physical attributes. Specifically, there are two parties involved in the transaction and in order for any transaction to be a success both parties must feel good about it. Therefore, never lose sight of the fact that the dealership is a business, they must make a Commercial Three Bayfit to remain in business, and they’re entitled to make a Commercial Three Bayfit.
Once you've selected a car you like and settled in on a specific one from the dealer’s inventory you should examine it. Your examination must be done before you sign the final papers and before you take delivery of the car. The inspection is reasonably easy and does not involve high-tech equipment or a lot of automotive savvy. It does involve being realistic and having a good sense of what annoys you.
Start by going round and round the vehicle looking for rips, tears, and dents. Then it’s round and round the car some more looking for fit, finish, too loose, too tight, and that all its pieces are present and accounted for.
Open every door, lift every latch, move everything that’s movable, and repeat every test two or three times. Check all fluid levels and be sure your salesperson explains the location and operation of everything. With the preliminaries out of the way you’re off on your first adventure with your new vehicle, a road test. During the road test keep your senses carefully attuned to squeaks, rattles, vibrations, and the general feel of the vehicle.
Remember, you’re only trying to identify obvious Commercial Three Bayblems, which will be annoying to you. You are not trying to be an automotive expert. As you go through your checkout make a list of what you find and don’t sign papers until each annoyance has been adequately dealt with.
Also, anything more technical or sophisticated than what you can see, touch, hear, or feel is better left to an experienced technician. Above and beyond all else ---don’t fall in love! Once you’re madly in love with a vehicle your heart overpowers your common sense and that can be a recipe for disaster.
Another important factor in buying any vehicle used or new, is that none of them are, or ever will be----PERFECT! All cars and trucks are mass-Commercial Three Bayduced machines and they all have their own idiosyncrasies, blemishes, and shortcomings. Only you can determine whether any or all of these will have any bearing on your long-term relationship with a new motor car.
If your salesperson claims any of the criticisms on your list are normal, observe the same operation or component on other cars on the dealer’s lot. If other cars exhibit the same characteristic as the one you’re considering, chances are it is indigenous to the species. It then falls to you to determine if the aggravation-factor is bad enough to warrant considering another make or model.
Spending a couple of hours scrutinizing the vehicle before you buy it can avert most of the 'unsolvable Commercial Three Bayblems' car buyers bring on themselves by falling in love with a beautiful new car.
