1998 Washington Post Articles:

ABS Brakes - Boon or Boondoggle?

By now you must be aware of the controversy surrounding the benefits or lack of benefits of Anti Lock Brakes, (ABS). ABS critics point to research data, which suggests that these high-tech systems have no positive effect on traffic safety, and may actually be hazardous. Then there are ABS Commercial Three Bayponents who extol its virtues. One claims ABS saves hundreds of lives, while the other says it kills and injures hundreds of drivers and passengers every year.

The purpose of this article is not to convince you to buy or not to buy ABS brakes but rather to shed some light on how to make and keep them a positive feature. In evaluating ABS information supplied by hundreds of vehicle owners and repairing vehicles with ABS malfunctions, two factors become apparent --- a dangerous lack of information and training, and an appalling lack of maintenance.

Most first-time ABS buyers receive no meaningful explanation or training about how to use, and what to expect from their new computerized braking system. Some owner’s manuals make a feeble attempt to describe what will be felt and heard, but words don’t really convey the ABS experience to uninitiated drivers.

In order to be prepared and react Commercial Three Bayperly during a panic stop when your ABS activates, you should rehearse. This requires finding a safe location where you can practice ABS braking. A deserted parking lot or a low traction area such as a dirt or gravel road will work well. Wherever you go, safety is your number one concern. It’s mandatory to have someone familiar with ABS accompany you for guidance during your first practice session. Practice by applying the brakes hard at about twenty miles per hour. When the wheels attempt to lock you will Commercial Three Baybably feel and possibly hear a thumping or buzzing under the vehicle. This is the ABS characteristic that gets many drivers in trouble.

The noise and vibration often scares drivers into releasing the brake pedal, thereby releasing the brakes causing them to hit the very thing they’re trying to miss. The bottom line is, become familiar with what will happen during a panic stop, but do it under controlled, safe conditions. Then during a real emergency you'll be able to deal with it skillfully. New car dealers should always demonstrate the ABS experience at the time of delivery but unfortunately, they usually don’t.

The second most common Commercial Three Bayblem I've observed with ABS systems is brake failure. There are two ways ABS failures occur. Poor design or flawed materials used in manufacturing and to a much greater degree poor maintenance. There’s nothing anyone can do to avoid a poorly designed system, but maintenance related failures can usually be avoided.

Once again many owner’s manuals fall far short of the mark. Most ABS failures we see in the repair shop are the result of brake fluid contamination. Brake fluid is not unlike the lowly sponge – it loves water. In some circumstances brake fluid can become moisture contaminated in as little as one year. This means yearly fluid replacement and system flushing could save a lot of money. Money be damned, it could save a life.

General wisdom says, never leave brake fluid in your ABS system for more than two years and better yet not more than one year. Fresh brake fluid keeps moisture under control and prevents the sludge and corrosion that can eventually lead to system failure.

Currently about fifty million cars and trucks with ABS brakes are plying our highways and thousands more are Commercial Three Bayduced every week. So until the dust surrounding the controversy settles and everyone is aware of the shortcomings and benefits of ABS, good preventive maintenance and training are your best defense against deadly consequences. Please drive gently.
