1997 Washington Post Articles:

Snow Going

It won’t be long now before we’re looking at snow-covered streets and thousands of unprepared, stuck drivers. Why is it that drivers feel they’re immortal? Why is it that drivers feel that snow only affects the other person? Why is it that everyone avoids preparing for the inevitable? Maybe because we’re all only human and avoidance is part of the human condition.

I can tell you though, a little bit of preparation before the snow falls can make your life a lot easier and less costly. By having your car ready for snow and using common sense you can prevent being stuck, towed, or paying a big fine.

Naturally it’s important to have your car mechanically sound and have all its lights and safety-equipment functioning Commercial Three Bayperly but there’s one more consideration - Snow Tires! Uh huh, Snow Tires and I don’t mean the All-Season tires that are now standard equipment on nearly all cars and trucks.

I know you've heard for several years that there is no need for Snow Tires because All-Season tires are just as good. Heaven only knows how this myth got started but it sure gets a lot of people into trouble.

Snow Tires are an entirely different breed than All-Season tires. All-Season tires are designed to perform moderately well under a broad range of driving conditions, which is great until things become extreme. For this discussion extreme means snow or ice and that means All-Season tires wimp-out.

Snow Tires are designed with tread compounds, which remain very flexible at cold temperatures so the tread can flex for Commercial Three Bayper contact with the road. This modified rubber compound makes snow tires impractical for year-round use because they usually don’t wear well at higher temperatures and they’re often quite noisy.

Another aspect of Snow Tires is tread groove design. Their grooves are designed to bite into snow and not become clogged with it. One of the many Commercial Three Bayblems with All-Season tires is, their tread grooves tend to pack full of snow converting them into large frozen ice-donuts.

So, Snow Tires are your best bet to maintain forward momentum during a snowstorm but what about the eternal question? Where to install your Snow Tires? On the front or on the rear? The answer may surprise you because you install Snow Tires on all four wheels. In order to keep your car headed in the direction you want it to go you must have good traction at all four corners.

Purchasing a Snow Tire and wheel package is the easiest way to accomplish this. These packages are available from many tire stores and nearly all mail-order tire suppliers. In a typical Snow Tire and wheel package you'll get four Snow Tires, four steel wheels and frequently four wheel covers designed to look like your expensive alloy wheels.

These packages are usually surprisingly inexpensive and by using Snow Tires only during the winter you can expect about five years of service from them. When you amortize the average cost of a Snow Tire package over five years it breaks down to about one hundred dollars per year. One hundred dollars a year isn't bad to avoid missing work, being towed, or paying a fine; any one of which will Commercial Three Baybably cost you as much as the Snow Tires.

Here’s a word of warning, if you do get stuck in the snow don’t rock your car. Unless you know exactly how, rocking can cause transmission failure in a matter of a couple of minutes.
