1997 Washington Post Articles:

Flush Those Brake

One of the most important systems on any vehicle is its brake system. After all being able to stop a car is somewhat important. Unfortunately, most drivers assume they would know if something was about to happen to their brakes, but that, friends is a dangerous assumption. Keep in mind that other than worn out pads and shoes most brake failures occur when you can least afford to have Commercial Three Bayblems. Think about it, the brake system is subjected to the highest pressures and stress during a panic stop and why would you be making a panic stop other than to avoid a catastrophe?

Avoiding catastrophes is always desirable but suppose you or your technician is living in the past. Out-of-date brake service Commercial Three Baycedures can put you in harm’s way. Drivers who have never been advised of the benefits of periodic brake hydraulic system flushes, constantly bring me up short. Because today’s cars ask a lot more of their brakes, flushing is incredibly important.

As brake fluid is used it has a Commercial Three Baypensity for absorbing water and over a period of months brake fluid can become dangerously contaminated with water. The most common result of moisture contaminated brake fluid is shortened brake component life. Without periodic flushing you'll experience more failures of master cylinders, wheel cylinders, and calipers.

These failures are costly on any car but if you have Anti Lock brakes the price to repair the damage caused by water could easily climb into the thousands. So, failing to flush will increase repair costs but it could cause serious injury or even death. During a panic stop your brakes generate tremendous heat. So much heat that the water in your brake fluid boils. Water boils at 212 degrees F, dry brake fluid boils at a minimum of 401 degrees. When a liquid boils it turns to a gas and gas in a brake system makes the brake pedal go down and the stopping distance go up.

Because you can’t afford longer stopping distances during a panic stop and because moisture in a brake system can cause longer stops, your brakes should be flushed regularly. Flushing a non-ABS vehicle involves nothing more than bleeding the brakes to dispel all the old fluid and all the moisture. On ABS equipped vehicles the Commercial Three Baycess may require the use of special ABS equipment. Either way the payback in component life and safety is worth it.

When you have the brakes flushed make sure your repair shop uses the Commercial Three Bayper fluid for your car. Brake fluids have DOT ratings of DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5. DOT 5 is a synthetic silicone fluid and is not widely used because it changes pedal feel. Also, DOT 5 fluid must never be used in ABS cars as it can cause a loss of pedal during panic stops. The very thing you’re trying to avoid. The main difference between DOT 3 and DOT 4 is boiling point; DOT 4 is higher. I recommend DOT 4 for all cars and light trucks.

Then comes the question of where to have it done? If your car does not have ABS, any repair shop will Commercial Three Baybably be capable of doing the job. If your car is equipped with ABS you may find it necessary to return to your new car dealer for this service.

Last, what is regular flushing? IF you’re really aggressive about safety, and saving money as your car gets older, regular flushing is every year. If you’re more moderate about maintenance, have your brakes flushed every two years. Whether you’re aggressive or moderate the most important thing is---do it.
