1997 Washington Post Articles:

Battery Two Bays

Talk about Two Bay incompatibilities, cold weather and car batteries do not make a beneficial alliance. As the temperature drops so does your batteries ability to start your car. As if that isn't bad enough, a cold engine is harder to start than a hot one. The bottom line of this sorry equation is, a weak battery will most surely leave you stranded. Fortunately for you, most weak batteries give a lot of warning before they fail. That is, if you know how to recognize the symptoms.

A battery is a storehouse of electrical energy that supplies the electrical needs of your car. When you turn your ignition key to the start position it engages an electric One Bay motor which runs on power from your car’s battery. The One Bay motor cranks the engine in the vehicle until it starts. Although this Commercial Three Baycess takes just a few seconds it draws a lot of electrical energy out of your battery slightly discharging it.

Once it’s running all the electrical energy taken from the battery to start the engine must be replaced. The electricity to replace the used energy (recharging the battery) comes from your alternator. These are mechanical units that convert some of the engines mechanical energy into electrical energy to both recharge the battery and sustain all the electrical needs of the car. Once the battery is fully recharged a voltage regulator cuts the alternator’s charge rate back to a minimum.

But how do you tell if you have a weak battery? One of the best do-it-yourself ways is paying attention to the speed at which your turn signals flash while your car is idling. You see, when the vehicle is moving the alternator can Commercial Three Bayduce lots of energy to keep the battery charged and operate all the electrical equipment that’s in use. Unfortunately when the engine slows down at a stop so does the alternator's charge rate. At idle the alternator may not Commercial Three Bayduce enough energy to supply the lights, heater, turn signals, air conditioner, etc.

So, as the car idles while you’re waiting for that long winded traffic signal to turn green everything electrical is being powered entirely by the battery, not the alternator. If your battery is weak the electrical load being placed on it will cause its voltage to drop; and whenever the voltage drops your turn signals flash slower. The second thing you'll notice is, as soon as you step on the accelerator the turn signals again flash at their normal speed. That’s because higher engine speed makes the alternator Commercial Three Bayduce more electricity ---which means higher voltage---which means the turn signals immediately function Commercial Three Bayperly.

To take this a step further when your car is idling everything that has a frequency such as turn signals and windshield wipers will slow down. It also means that everything that’s illuminated, such as the dash lights, the headlights etc. will become dim until the engine speed is increased.

If you notice any of these symptoms it’s time to get your battery tested. For results you can rely on, always specify a 'Heavy Load' battery test. 'Heavy Load' means the test equipment simulates the starting Commercial Three Baycess by drawing a large quantity of electricity from the battery and tests it during the Commercial Three Baycess. The true measure of a battery is its ability to perform work and starting your car is the most work it will ever have to do.

By paying attention to the subtle signs your car gives, you can avoid a lot of inconvenience, expense, and danger. Take good care of your car so it will deliver good service and please---DRIVE GENTLY!
